The subscription price of the Dispatch is $1 a year; 50 cents fcr six months; 2r cents for three months?invariably cash in advance. 1 Circulation, ^,316. Wednesday, Marclr6.1907. m Thank goodness, we are still on th water-wttfiron. , 1% You ought to have teen Sheriff Corley riding that keg of "booze" frona Irmo to Lexington. The jug trade has a brand, "Per sonal Use," that is quite popular with the "swigers." * How about improving the streets and side walks of Lexington Mr. City r Fathers? Patience has ceased to be ' a virtue. What a sight will gladden nrof/tlifnl OXT& i?':( ?rilUU WrtlMli^! naibutu vj vj When the dispensary opens With that good old rye. There certainly must be m agnetism or infatuation around the dispensary and like tire rose that faded and shatg tered at will, yet it retains its sweet fragrance still. If every sheriff in South Carolina fr would do their duty as well a9 Sheriff Corley of Lexington, the " blindt tigers" would soon go out of business. The Orangeburg Patriot has a candidate for the United States Senate to succeed Senator Latimer, but so far refuses te divulge his name. , The Arkansas minister, who preached three hours on "Hell," probably *' wanted to get his congregation warmed up to it. Congress has passed a hill fcr tae relief of a Dr. B-o-o-z-e-r, of Columbia, S. C. We didn't know they had any life of them in Senator Tillman's State.? : Washington Post. The Augusta Herald, since the fa| g moos Thaw trial has been in progress, has issued a 7 o'clock edition?making two issues daily. The.Herald has improved wonderfully in the last few & years, and is now recognized as one k, of the leading dailies of the country. * i ? The Washington correspondent of fk the News and Courier is authority for the statement that Congressman A. F. Lever will be a candidate for Senator Latimer's place in the primary .* next year. If Lever enters the race f he will make it hot for Brer Latimer, if ?Orangeburg Times and Democrat. I No charms in office for me (?) on J this side of the Edisto, and we, therefe fore, desire a change. Imagine that Sheriff, County Commissioner, Judge S of Probate and member of the Legisjpft lature. It is a big thing for them, -7 but woe unto the foolish tax-payers? fe' ? of Edisto county. Some of the leading dailies and a I number of weeklies throughout the country are making a big to do over Senator Tillman's going on the lec| ture platform during the summer. If 1 * n ^n Vinn<^ nor? U10 OCDilbUr ViUl iiia&c a uuuuivu thousand dollars a year, instead of forty-three thousand as it is claimed he will make this summer, it is nobody's business, and we are inclined to think that those raising the howl are only kicking because they are not so fortunate as Senator Tillman. V ' * CIn our last issue a typographical made us say that county dispensaries A and prohibition were, morally, one and the same, when we meant to saj that between state and county dis pensaries, there were no moral differ ence. "We don't want to be placed ii the ridiculous position that there i no difference morally between dispen saries and prohibition. We hav seen evidence enough here since th ciose of the dispensary to convince u of this fact, though we had neve been convinced. We regret that we are again calle to refer to the very unwise project, c a few individuals on the Edisto whc like Bancho's ghost, seem not willin to down?that is to cut off a shoe ' string on this side of the Edist to form a new county out of parts c Aiken, Orangeburg and Lexington t be known as Edisto county. Thei must be personal gain for these pr< moters, (to the detriment <of the m* jority whom they are trying to d< ceive,) or their judgment is bad an foresight short. Let us illustrate, fc reflection of all of us who are inte: ested. Take Edgefield county, when in touched and her grand old bordei -I-covered all the territory from the A ken, Lexington and Abbeville line surrounded with growing prosperit and light taxes, but like in the Edisl case, offices were too few for tl 1 seekers, and with their oily tongue ' i the intriguing politicians drew glo\ i ing pictures of everlasting prosperil 1 and happiness; they pulled the wo< 1 over the eyes of the general tax-pa; ers, and knifed the old count}7, and ; a result Saluda levies a tax of cv< six mills, leaving the old county wit : a levy of over five mills, where; when intact, covering the identic ; territory7 of both counties, the oi i county paid about one-fourth the le\ that is now actually necessary to rc both counties. These are facts ar the last levy made by the Legislate i will bear out the truthfulness of th assertion. , List-en at the Edisto promoter who are they? Locate them if yc i please, and "Half the tale will n< ha^e been, told," and the end < this scheme is not in sight. We war i to be fair and just to all cqncerne< ' but it is a part of our duty to try an s show to the r^ople they propose 1 take from us,?hht it is not to the interest to leave L xington county and while the distance might make somewhat inconvenient to the cit zens of that section, if they ai summoned here at court they recei\ their ten cents per mile and per dien We wish we were nearer these goo people, so that we might see then mingle with them, chat with the] , and have them with us more; bi how can we move the court house t suit all the people's convenience an sometimes think that it is well thj distance has to be measured befoi reaching the court house. ~ It give time for forethought and possibly pr< vents much litigation to the bette: meat of her citizens. Sign no pet tions, and should a vote ever tah place, be sure you keep the minorit below nineteen. ? A Fine Speech. We are in receipt of a copy of th? splendid speech by Hon. A. F. LeV( before the National House of Repr< . sentatives on the subject of The A] palachian Forest Reserve bill. M: Lever is one of the brainiest Congresi men in our - delegation, is quicke] tongued than a woman, and the ma* terly manner in which he handled h subject, is worthy of all praise, whil the way he referred to *4 that mysfcer ous influence" was scorching enoug to make any republican squirm. On Wednesv~ day evening our friend, W. A. Der^ rick, passed quietly away. He had 0 been a sufferer since Christmas eve. All that physicians and tender, loving 19 hands could do did not prevail. He " was a member of the Antioch Baptist church, where he was always found at his post of duty. The church loses ^ a faithful member, the home a devoted husband, a kind father; the State ry losesia noble, upright citizen. The in ^ funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. F. McGill, and his remains were laid to rest in the Swansea .cemetery in the presence of a large crowd of sorrowing people. On the morning of Tuesday last, about G o'clock, the death angel vis^ ited the peaceful home of our beloved W. I. Jumper, and took his loving and faithful bosom companion. She ^ too, had been an intense sufferer for a | great while, all of which she bore J? with Christian fortitude. She was a ir member of the Methodist church and [' died in the faith. Her remains were interred in the Calvary church bury1_ ing grounds, the funeral being cone ducted by Rev. J. F. McGill. She > leaves a husband and five children to J mourn her death. Our hearts go out in deep sympathy to the bereaved ' ones in these two sad-strickened families. May this dispensation of Providence be the means of causing us all ? to live better lives, and when the change comes, we too, may be ready j. ,e to go' The small grain is not very promis^ ing at present. Congressman Lever is rapidly forging his way to the front. It seems now that he will be a candidate for "6 j Senator Latimer's seat. Should he ^ ( decide to make the race he will have an easy walk-over, especially in the seventh district. Joseph Williams and F. M. Sharpe Lk are two of the happiest mortals hereabouts now, as they sing sweet lulla A by's to the pretty girl boarders at their homes. ) ' The Athen's graded school now boasts of a literary society in which the young as well as the old can vent their eloquence on the living issues of lg- the day. Here talents are being developed that may some day make ! , glad the hearts of Uncle Ben Tillman k and Frank Lever, to know that they I are native South Carolinians, and put to shaine the admirers of Demosthenees and Cicero. Should the health of the happy Fer lix family continue you may again hear from one who is opposed to the a mince-pieing of Lexington county in II the formation of others. We are all opposed to it now, henceforth and all time to come. Billy Felix.
