Smith went to Columbia Monday to attend to some business and to buy ? holiday gifts for his family, and being unable to get back on the 5 o'clock . His body will be interred in . the Long burying ground, and the funeral services will be conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. A. Cromer. Mr. Smith was a whole souled, big hearted man and made many friends wherever he went. He wad 58 years of age and leaves besides a host of friends and other relatives, five sons and two daughters to mourn his loss. Woman; Tfctn Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 24.?Walter Hiirhtower. a painter, shot and killed instantly early today Miss Bessie Jones, a young woman of 18 years, and then turned the weapon on himself, putting a bullet into his^ own brain. He died several hours later at a hospital. Hightower leaves a wife and three small children. Miss Jones f had been an inmate of the Hightower home since, last July, and between her and her murderer an infatuation was said to have exhisted, on account of which Mrs. Hightower had left the 7 , house, howevet, returning later. Mrs. Hightower sent her eight-year old 9on to waken Miss Jones about 8 o'clock. The boy discovered his father in the room with the young woman. When the father saw his son he fired the fatal shots. , Negroes Threaten Town. Meridian, Miss., Dec. -24.?According to reports received here tonight the negroes for miles around have congregated in the town of Wahalak, 40 miles north of this city and all dur ing this afternoon have paraded ^he ! streets threatening vengeance on the t whites because of the killing of one ! negro and the wounding of another | by a conductor of a passenger train j on the Mobile and Ohio railroad yes- I terday morning, while the latter was ; attempting to quell a disturbance i aboard his train. At the town of Walhalak scarcely more than 25 white persons reside and in ! /response to a plea for protection, j battery I and company D, of the state | militia, stationed in this city, has been ordered to proceed to the scene with all dispatch. The battery, by ! instructions, carried a Gatling gun i and all the men are heavily armed. j - > ? j Lynching in Varyland. Annapolis, Md., Dec. 21.?A mob numbering 25 or 30 men broke down ' the door of the Anapolis jail at an early hour today, took out Henry Davis, the negro who on last Friday J criminally assaulted Mrs. John Reid, i white, near Igleharts station, and lynched him. Dayis, who also was known by the name of Chambers, had confessed his guilt. Little or no resistance was offered the mob by the officers at the jail and none whatever by the prisoner. He was dragged to a vacant lot on College creek, a quar- j ter of a mile distant, where he was i strung up to a limb of a tree and half j a dozen bullets fired into him. As i the body was being let down one of the lynchers exclaimed: "Another white woman is avenged!5' Mr. Jake Snelgrove's family en joyed a -lovely family reunion and Christmas dinner at his home two miles above this place. Livingston, of Batesburg, will be married to Miss Sallie Bodie, daughter of Mr. J. P. Bodie. All these young people are extreme ly popular and many will be the congratulations bestowed upon them. Many hogs are being killed; the j people want pudding and sausage for Christmas. The Cherokee school is prospering under the management of Miss Kizzie Ruth George. Mr. A. W. Shealy has about completed his new dwelling. Messrs. Claude and Silas Amick went to. Columbia Friday. Mr. P. I. Rawl went to Lexington Saturday. Wishing a Merry Christmas and a bright, prosperous and happy New Tear to the Dispatch and its many readers, I am, as ever, 'A Sly Fox. ICissesZfird Eatortains. Misses Lucile and Essie Efird deightfully and charmingly entertained a few of their young friends last evening at Progressive Anogram. The game proved most interesting as well as entertaining. The gentlemen's prize, a box of cigars, was won by Mr. Heber Barr, while Misses Hellen Bradford and Mary Graham tied for the ladies, a lovely handkerchief; it came to a draw and Miss Bradford won. Dr. Rice B. Harman and Miss Beulah Fox tied for the booby?a box of calidy?and Dr. Harman won. At the close of the game a delightful salad course was served, after which the guests departed, all regretting that the time of departure had i arrived. Those who enjoyed the hospitality j of these charming young ladies were: ; Misses Hellen and May Bradford, Mary and Ruth Graham, Lula Kaminer, Beaulah Fox; and Dr. Rice B. Harman, Sam J. Leaphart, Sam P. Roof, Heber Barr, Karl F. Oswald, C. E. Leaphart and Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Haltiwanger. - Christmas Tree. The Christmas tree at the Baptist church on Monday evening was greatly enjoyed by a _ large crowd. The tree was a large and beautiful one loaded down with presents for both old and young. Mr. W. A. Harman, Superintendent of the Sunday school, was master of 'ceremonies. He was assisted by Capt. L. W. Redd and Mr. Gibbs who kept the crowd laughing f^om beginning to end. We might add that Mrs. Gibbs, Mrs. Powell, Wrs. W. A. Harman, Misses Alice Wilson, Lessie Gibbs and Broxia Barrett, added much to the success of the occasion. ?. Unclaimed Mail. Sevan Murders in 48 Sours.
