Within the last month the State veterinarian has received a number of letters concerning cattle affected with sore mouth and, in many cases, sore or tender feet. As the disease seems to be generally prevalent, no doubt as a result of the long continued wet weather, the following information I nnnnominnr if. ia armnliwl for nnhlif>a fcion: The disease is known in medicine as mycotic stomatitis. It is not contagions or infectious but is caused by fungi or moulds which grow upon forage or grass. These fungi, which grow luxuriantly in wet seasons, have a very irritant effect upon the lining membrane of the mouth, the membrane covering the tongue and upon the soft skin between the claws. Affected animals eat and drink with great difficulty or not at all, the saliva forms froth around the lips or drippies from the mouth, the membrane lining the mouth is red and hot and contains ulcers, the membrane covering the tongue is affected in the same way, and a very offensive odor is usually present. Sometimes the skin between the claws and just above the hoof is affected and then the animal walks stiff and sore. The trouble is usually confined to the anterior limbs, but all four legs may be attacked. In ttiiik uuwa uiucrs .way aiau appeal ujli the udder and teats. Herds of cattle in which animals have been attacked with this disease should be removed from the pasture in which they have been running. The affected animals should be fed on soft food, such as bran mashes, meal and gruels. They should have free access at all times to clean, cool water and two heaping tablespoonfuls of borax 9hould be dissolved in each of the first two buckets of water given each day. The mouth should be washed out daily with a solution of creolin ?one tablespoonful of creolin to each quart of water?and following this a half tablespoonful of alum or borax should be placed on the tongue. Diseased areas on the foot should be washed daily with the creolin solution and afterward covered with zinc ointment. If this treatment is properly arrolied and the animals are carefully I * fed the disease will rapidly disappear. Pain from a Burn Promptly Believed by Chamberlain's Pain Balm. A little child of Michael Strauss, of Vernon, Conn., was recently in great pain from a burn on the hand, and as cold applications only increased the inflammation, Mr. Stranss came to Mr. James N. Nichols, a local merchant, for something to stop the pain. Mr. Nichols says: "I advised him to nse Chamberlain's Pain Balm, and the first application drew ont the inflammation and gave immediate relief. I have nsed this , liniment myself and recommend it very often for cuts, bnrns, strains and lame back, and have never known it to disappoint. '' For sale by Katifmaim Drug Co. Unclaimed Mail. Lila Alleine, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Frick, born August 8, 1905, and died August 22, 1906, aged 1 year and 14 days. Wm. E. P. Haltiwanger was born February 6, 1858, and died August 30, i 1906, aged 48 years, 6 months and 24 days. In early life he was confirmed in Mt. Olivet Lutheran church, in which he remained a faithful member until his death. After a long period of intense suffering he camly fell asleep in Jesus. He leaves to mourn his departure an aged mother, three brothers and four sisters, a loving wife, one affectionate son, a kind and loving daughter, two grandchildren and a host of other relatives. Weep not, dear ones, for he is at rest. This should be your consolation, that your loss is his eternal gain. J. B. H. Starring to Death. Because her stomach was so weakened by useless drugging that she could not eat, Mrs. Mary H. Walters, of St. Clair street, Columbus, O., was literally starv ing to death. She writes: "My stomach was so weak from useless drugs that I could not eat, and my nerves so wrecked that I could not sleep; and not before I was given up to die was I induced to try Electric Bitters; with the wonderful result that improvement began at once, and a complete cure followed." New York, Sept. 12,?Race riots on "San Juan Hill" on the west side of the city this morning caused the calling out of reserves from several police stations. One negro is dying and scores are hurt. Trouble between negroes started rioting; a policeman tried to arrest two negroes for fighting in Sulzer's casino river park. They set upon him and drove him from the place. Meanwhile two thousand negroes attacked the white employees of the park, and a free for all fight followed. Rioting broke out fresh when a policeman shot a negro who attempted to escape arrest. Scores of negroes filed out of the houses. The reserves were called out and after many minutes of fighting the police obtained control of the situation. A Lesson in Health.
