r Obituary, k * Miss Mary Taylor was born March - 19th, 1840, departed this life August 11th, 1906, aged 56 years, four months ?r and twenty-three days. She wasbaptized in infancy, and at the age of maturity confirmed in Nazareth church, but later joined the number j who organized Pisgah congregation j in which church the funeral service ; was held in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends, ' and the body was laid to rest in the cemetery near by. i Though a great sufferer she submitted to her affliction at the will the Lord. Just before her departure she offered a brief and earnest prayer for those who so faithfully attended her, and expressed the confident hope that all would be well with her in the world to come, and we trust she is now realizing that hope. She leaves five brothers, four sisters and many * . other relatives and friends to mourn their loss, which we trust is her eternal gain. J. W. N. They are adapted to old and young. Obituary, Eeater Rebecca, daughter of Henry and Racheal Shull and wife of W. D. Lybrand, died August 16, 1906, aged 55 years, 8 months and 12 days. She was married to W. D. Lybrand May 19, 1868. To them were given five sons and one daughter. Her husband, three sons and nine grand children survive her. In early youth she became a member of Mt. Hebron M. E. church and afterwards to St. David's E. L. church. She was a dutiful daughter, an effectionate wife, a kind mother, a good neighbor and an humble Christian. But her work is done and she has passed into the home beyond. Her remains were laid to rest in the cometery of her church in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing friends, C. ANOTHER 2TE&E0 SWTT2TG Third Lynching in Palmetto State Within Last Ten Days Was Near St. George?Negro Taken From Jail and Body Riddled. Willie Spain, a North Carolina negro, 21 years old, was shot to death by a mob near St. George, Dorchester county, Thursday 23. This is the third lynching in South Carolina within ten days. S. L. Connor, manager of the Dorchester Lumber company's stores at Badham, was notified by a negro that he saw another negro attempting to enter a window of his home and then run away into a nearby cane patch. Connor immediately started for his home, going through the cane field. He suddenly came upon Spain. He grappled with the negro, striking him a severe blow, breaking several bones in his hand. The negro finally freed himself and ran into nearby woods. Connor notified his neighbors and a search was begun. About two hours later Spain was captured in a negro cabin not far distant. He was brought ! to St. George and turned over to Sheriff Limehouse, who locked him up in jail. I Shortly afterwards a posse of forty j or fifty men went to the sheriff and j demanded the keys of the jail. Securing the keys, the jail was unlocked and the negro was taken to the house of Connor, where his eleven-year-old daughter, who was alone in the house, positively identified the negro as the one who tried to climb through the window, but was frightened away by her screams. The negro did not protest his innocence but admitted that he had come to the residence with the intention of entering it, but for what purpose he did not say. The mob took the negro to a nearby oak tree, strung him up to a limb and j literally shot him to pieces. How to Avoid Appendicitis. Three times he attacked colored women and was driven away without doing them injury, and at last he entered the premises of Benjamin King, a white farmer, living in the Coronaca sec tion, loudly proclaiming tnat, ne meant to assault the women of the place. He had a gun, but King succeeded in disarming him, and later, securely bound him, he was taken to Greenwood, apparently a raving maniac. Picking is well advanced in south Texas, has begun in central Texas, and will begin over northern Texas before October 1st. A bale or two are being received at Dallas. There is impending, according to cotton planters, who are interested in securing labor, serious trouble when the time comes for gathering the crop as a whole. The weather has been conducive to the production of a crop | in northern Texas that will surpass that of former years. Provided that market prices are maintained this heavy production will be a source of joy to the farmers but for the scarcity of labor. Already reports are being sent to all parts of the south to induce negro cotton pickers to come to Dallas and be distributed to localities where they are most needed. United States Senator Charles A. Culberson was informed by friends today that it looks as if much of the cotton will go unpicked, because of the large yield of staple and the short supply of labor. It is criticised on every hand. It has to deal with all cranks in a community, and to do this successfully requires judgment and patience. It has power, to the credit of journalism is nearly always wielded for the public good. No question of vital concern to the people fails to find a strong support from the paper, and this too without remuneration. The publisher spends his money to further these projects I and the community never gives a thought to the matter of cost to him. It is not paid out of the public pocket. The newspaper wants every concern to prosper. Why should not this good will be mutual? To make a profit a ' newspaper must have living rates for I both paper and advertising space.? Bamberg Herald. Cross Hill, S. C., August 23.?Lightning played sad havoc four miles south of this place about 7 o?clock yesterday morning. J. M. Holder, and Joe Koon, two white men, were instantly killed by a flash and J. W. Koon was knocked senseless. A fouryear-old son of J. W. Koon had his eyebrows scorched off. The lightning struck the chimney of the house with the result above, and set the house on fire. J. W. Koon revived in time to put the fire out and save the house. There were a succession of heavy rainfalls here during yesterday even- j ing, with much lightning and thunder.
