Mr. C. W. Sherer, of Bremen, who is well known in Augusta, where he was formerly stationed, and who was in the city several weeks ago has arrived at Savannah after an extended trip through the cotton belt. Of the condition of the crop at various places, he says: 4'In Middle and Southwest Georgia, especially in the Augusta and Tennille, district, the fields, when I visited that section, seemed to be in excellent condition, the cotton looking healthy and strong. I noticed an innraosAd around Dublin. i 'In Alabama I found the fields clean and better worked than in Southwest Georgia. The prospects so far seemed to be quite flattering for a good cotton crop. I visited in the middle and southern districts of the state. "During my stay in Texas I found that the northeastern part had been suffering from too much cold weather and also from a surfeit of rain. The cotton appeared to be backward, with the acreage in that particular territory somewhat decreased. In the middle and southwestern sections of the state I found the increased acreage to be considerable, and the prospects highly satisfactory. In the San Antonio district cotton is as fine as ever was known. Northeast of Dallas the fields were not so good. I heard *oTv-krf.H from Tndian Territory. D. routes have been discontinued, because of the lack of patronage. The average route is expected to handle three thousand pieces of mail per month, with a possible minimum of two thousand pieces. After the quarter ending June 30, 1 all routes handling less than three thousand pieces per month are liable to be reduced to tri-weekly service or be discontinued. If each patron will do his part there will not be any danger of the routes being discontinued. Ask yourself the question.?What am I doing to help support my route? One half of the patrons are not spending more than three dollars per year towards supporting it and I know that if your route is discontinued you will wish you had spent double that amount. I know one patron of ordinary means that spends nine dollars each year for newspapers, thereby showing that he appreciates the great service that he is getting. We cannot expect the service unless we help to support it. Hoping all patrons will more fully appreciate the service in the near future than they have in the past. I Am a Warm Supporter. Saluda, S. C., June 6-?Another homicide has been added to the record of Saluda county. Dave Chapman, a you white man, 22 years of age, was shot by James Jackson, also white, at the home of Mark Rutherford, near Saluda C. H. The killing was the result of an old quarrel, but which was supposed to have been settled. A dispute arose at the peacemakers' house and Chapman was shot and killed. It is said that Jackson ordered Chapman to leave, but he returned, his purpose being unknown. Congressmen Lever, Patterson and Legate Seated. Washington, June 8.?The friends of Representatives Lever, Patterson and Legare are greatly pleased that the house committe on elections has finally decided to dismiss the contests filed against them for their seats in congress. There has never been any serious consideration given the matter by the South Carolina representatives, and thev have never believed that the matter would end in any other way than it has. The three negro claimants Scott, Myers and Prioleau who contested the seats of congressmen Lever, Patterson and Legare were allowed the usual fee of $2,000 apiece, although there was no shadow of ground for contest. This ends the matter for the present session of congress, and it is not known yet whether or not the same men will contest the elections to take place this summer or not. Senator Blackburn Chosen as Minority Leader. Washington, June 8.?The Democratic senators have decided to elect Senator J. C. S. Blackburn, of Kentucky, chairman of the democratic party caucus to succeed the late Senator Gorman. The position carries with it the leadership of the minority on the floor. Chamberlain, democrat, was re-elected on June 5th, governor of Oregon by a majority of about two thousand but Jonathan Bourne, Jr., received the popular nomination for United States senator by 5,000. Finding that his conferers were going to kick him out, Senator Burton, of Kansas, resigned his seat in the United States senate last Tuesday, "to take effect immediately." He had been convicted in the courts of violating the law which forbids members of congress from practicing before any of the departments.
