Webb, of Rhode Island, a director in tbe Olympia cotton mil), concerning tbe employment of Jews in tbe cotton mills, attracted a great deal of atten tion and was generally discussed by tbe operatives and officers of tbe various cotton mills wben tbe Washington dispatch was read yesterday. Just what was discussed at the recent meeting of the directors of the cotton mills cannot be learned, but from conversation with some of I- the officers it is believed that this very matter was brought up. Mr* Webb has stated that the experiment of employing the Jews was tried in the New England mills with success and also that the help problem was becoming so serious that the cotton mills had to figure on a certain |; amount of loss every year. That the cotton mills of this section are considering this was admitted by one official and the prospect of a bureau being organized in New York to represent the Southern mills is very k. bright The officers, however, fear that there might be some prejudice against the Hebrews. The ^operatives are reluctant to discuss the matter. Many of them are steady and others are migratory. The steady ones have no objection to the Jews and would welcome a large number of them in order that there might be fnll capacity ran all the time. I, Feb. 21 ?The naval station learns that the six torpedo boats now at Norfolk destined for service on the Pacific station will probably leave April 7th on their long voyage to the Pacific ocean. Waehington, Feb 22.?The foreign commerce of the United States during the first seven months of the current year amounted to $1,752,421,330, or an average of $250,000000 par month. At the same rate for tbe year it will exceed $3 000,000,000 and be a record breaker in the history of foreign trade. The increase in importations is chiefly in manufacturers' materials. Agricultural products and manufactures are chief exports. ^ ' \ A Fearful Fall. Edward Hall, a boy eleven yeais old, met with a fearful accident last Thursday at the Graoby mill, Columbia. The boy was playiog in the weave room near the elevator shaft on the fifth floor. By some means he fell into the shaft and down to the bottom.
