Does the hope of overcoming the spirit of disregard to law in South Carolina depend upon the functions and operations of Liw and Order League*? I should say no, not necessarily. Everyone who has given the matter mature thought has seen that where fit men are put in authority the law may be enforced, and when UDfit men are iu authority law is disregarded. Whatever disregard to law and order that may be pointed cut today will find it safe and proper correction in the putting of the right kind of men in authority. Lexington county has many such men. If we would go forward in everything that promotes law and order we should seek meD for office who regard the public good as of greater value than their personal or private interest. There has been, there is and there will continue to be men who only seek the uloave3 and fishes" that get intocffice. Judas Iscariat was somewhat like one of these. His conscience- however was not so dead that blood money could not arouse it. When a devout woman with "a pound of ointment of Bpikenaid very costly" expressed her opinion of Christ Judas said, "why ( was not this ointment sold for three ( har.drfd pieces and given to the poor?" Our courts and our officers are all that we need to promote law and order. When these are performing ( their duties aright a worthy and appreciative citizenship will bid them God speed. I An officer or court which would refuse to allow the people to express an opinion on a question effecting j the character of the government just because it would cost three or four hundred dollars to do so is an eco* Domist not of the right sort. A Law j and Order League cannot awake such. Elect the best man and there ] will be no need of any other tie than love of home and country to bind our people in one common effort to promote the general good. Planning, scheming acd devisiDg for places, and to obtain "loaves and fishes" for their sake only will not be in favor. Conscience averted by the spirit of right, will assert itself and cause the murderer to quake, the thief to fear and the abuses of authority to repent. Give us the right kind of men for office; give us courts that do justice and you give, us a model , country. Berlin, Jan. 24 ?Advices received this morning state that all the villages of the island of SavaiJ, one of the Saaoan group in the Pacific, have been destroyed by a volcanic eruption. All the plantations have ; been ruined and 13,000 inhabitants are destitute and in most extreme d:9treme distress. Cold Wavo Coming. Washington, D. C, Jan. 22?Tte warm wave of the last few days is fast breaking up uDder the influence of the area of high pressure and cold weather that is movmg eastward over the Mississippi valley, according to the reports to the weather bureau. Cold wave warnings have been issued for the Eiet Gulf States, including Georgia, Western North Carolina, interior South Carolina, the extreme western portion of Virginia and Northern Florida. Storm warnings are displayed on the west Florida coast and on the Atlantic coast from Key West lo Norfolk ?Augusta Herald. After Two Governors. Patterson, N. J., Jan. 24 ?Secret service men are searching this city for the leaders of a circle of anarchists who have been plotting to kill Gov. Pdttison, of Oaio, and Gov. Peonypacker, of Pennsylvania. The executives' assassination, it is said, was to be followed by others. Letters seized by the police of Baird, Penn., disclosed the plot. A Jamaican Lady Speaks Highly of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy.
