There were hot times at the barbecue at Bateeburg last Saturday and the large crowd in attendance was treated to a scene which carried one back to the campaigns of the early 90's. The sensational feature of the occasion, if Buch it can be called, happened during the speech of Senator Tillman and at that point when he declared that be had asked the Governor to remove the present State Board of Dispensary Directors because they have trampled the law under foot and ignored many points in the law. They don't buy under the competitive- system any longer. It waa not his business, but the Governor's, and when he got to "the Board says in its advertisements that no bids for X liquor for leas than $150 will be received," then Col. John Bell Towill, a member of the Board, arose and the fo lowing colloquy ensued: Towill?"Senator Tillman, that is false; you know that is not so." Tillmfen?"You get the advertisement then and prove it." Towill?"God knows what vou did . tM when you went to Cincinnati!' Tillman?4T didn't go to Cincinnati, besides I had only $25,000 to buy liquor for the whole State; I had to buy liquor on credit because I didn't have the money to pay for it." HOW ABOUT REQUEST BOOKS. "Wnat about the request books, Mr. Towill ?"?the reply was lost iD / the noise which followed. Senator Tillman then said be bad met Mr. Towill on the train shortly after his election on the Board and bad congratulated him, telling him that if he would get in the middle of the road be would be all right, and Towill said that was what he intended to do, but that he had played the devil doing it. Mr. Towill arose and said something which was not heard by the a ? m. i_ ? mm, correapoiiueui, vu wmuu jLutuau idplied: UI haven't charged you with stealing." Senator Tillman afterward said in conversation with several .gentlemen that be had absolutely no feeling against Mr. Towill and believed him to be thoroughly honest, but thought that he was in bad company. Otherwise the meeting passed off quietly and everybody had a good time and plenty to eat. The other speaker was the Hon. C M. Efird. "Stepping upon the plktform, laboring under muchv excitement, Mr. Towill declared that he had no personal feeling against Senator Tillman; was sorry that he had Jost bis head and would not do so- again. Continuing he said: "I hold dear my good name, and I would rather be esteemed by Batesburg people than to have any office in the gift of % the people. I have not been debauched neither have* I been bribed. I am not one dollar richer and the people of Batesburg know it." Those who know Col. Towill know that he is incapable of doing any act not in strict accord with honesty. Comptroller General Jones has re fused to pay over to tbose counties voting out the dispensary their apportionment of the dispensary profits for school purposes. It is likely that the issue will have to be decided by the courts. The Governor, through Commis* sioner Tatum, has forbidden the dispensers to ship whiskey into those . counties voting out the dispensary; or, in other words, he has declared it to be unlawful for dispensers to ?11 any shipping orders. The Carolina Spartan says, the killing of Allen Pendleton, a negro near Honea Path, last week, was not a lynching. It was a cowardly brutal, cold blooded deed, committed by white meo, because they believed the Court and a white jury would hold them guiltless. There were about a dozen men in the gang and all are known. It remains to be S6en whether they will be adequately punished, or turned loose to continue their course of crime. Tbere will be a meeting of the Cotton .Growers' Convention of this county in this place next Monday. Messrs Hyatt and Smith are expected to be present. Every farmer in the county should attend as matters of importance to cotton growers are to be transacted. The pool rooms and gambling bells of Columbia were raided by the police last Friday. A large amount of gambling pbarapbernelia were captured but no arrests were made, as the gamblers vamosed the ranch when the alarm w?s given. Over two hundred applicants for admission into Clemson had to be turned down for the want of room. The capacity of the domitory is 600 and the applicants numbered 907. i ????????uammmmmm? 1 a Cow gave Butter mankind would have to invent milk. Are You Engaged ? , Engaged people should remember that alter xiiarriage man v quoijicxa uiu w avoided by keeping their digestions in good condition with Electric Bitters. S. A. Brown, of Bennettsville, S. C., says: "For years my wife suffered intensely from dyspepsia, complicated with a torpid liver, until she lost her strength and vigor and became a mere wreck of her former self. Then she tried Electric Bitters, which helped her at once, and finally made her entirely well. She is now strong and healthy." The Kaufmanu Drug Co., druggists, sells and guarantees them, at 50c. a bottle. As an evidence that oor farmers are learning wisdom from bitter experience we mention that they are purchasing various kinds of labor, saving farming implements, so as to provide against the scarcity of labor of which there has been a general complaint during the past seaeoD. They do not propose to be caught napping any longer by depending so largely upon the help of a class of people that is becoming more unreliable each year. Iq the past few weeks there have been sold by our merchants a large number of mowers and rakes of various makes, together with various kinds of other farm machinery and when the Beason opens next year they will be in a position to pick the choice of labor and let the balance nn trhora fhav to ant. tn_ An unknown foot pad is reaming the streets of Columbia after night fall, releiviDg citizens of jswelry, valuables and pocket change.
