" A minister who bad preached a sermon on the murder of Abel by Cain was called upon during the \ week by a worried looking man with en humble request, says Tit-Bits. "You mind that sermon you preached last Sunday forenoon?' said the visitor. "Yes." "About a man called Cain that killed his brother?" "Certainly." "Well, next Sunday would you kindly explain that he's no relative of Caine who keeps the shop in High -i .o ~xr? u _ ,s_ ~ Birweii AOU see, everyuuuy UOB been thinking it was me or some friend of mine." Explanation. "H' Seems Not Well Posted," over signature of "An Old Reader" noticed. In my notes to Dispatch two weeks ago, in my closing remarks, I mentioned "that the doors of White Rock church had been closed since Rev. Mr. B. left (so I am informed)". This information was given me by two gentlemen, members of High Hill church, one of the churches ot old Jtsethel JFastorate. Of course if White Rock church was closed it is reasonable to conclude that the balance of the churches composing old Bethel Pastorate were also closed. "An Old Reader" says that the doors of White Rock church have not been closed, and mentioned that the Sunday school has continued, , lectures and services, &c. Of course l I was aod em of the opinion that when theaoors of an institution, such, as banks and churches, ate closed, it means that the banks stop paying out or receiving money and a church is without regular services. Of course I may be mistaken. If I am, there are thousands laboring under the same hallucination. So in regard to the calling or engaging Rev. Mr. Haigler, "An Old Reader" says White Rock church did not hire him but White Rock church, a child of old Bethel, with the other churches did, or words to toat en-.ct. No harm was intended. The gentlemen who gave me my nolea are warm frieode, and supporters of Bethel Pastorate and expressed a hope that the church doors would soon be opened for regular services. I presume that they meant all the churches of old Bethel Pastorate. H. Has Stood The Test 25 Years. The old, original Grove's Tasteless Chill Tonic. You know what yon are taking. Washington, July 11?Secretary Wilson has turned over to the attorney general all the papers in con milk fkla Aftffnn 1 co tanrd in. UOVblUU TTIVU vuc WVWU ivtaaugw vestigation. B is estimated that this is done with the expectation that the prosecution of several per* eons mentioned in the report of the Becrefe service officers will follow. The secretary said the allegation bad been made that tobacco figures had.been manipulated and the matter would be looked into. The new system of preparing the monthly crop report, devised since the cotton investigation began was put in force today. . It is felt at the Department of Agriculture that notwithstanding the opinion of the United States district attorney, that on the facts presented in the secret service report on the cotton crop investigation he did not think the prosecution would lie, a re-examination of the testimony would tend to alter that opinion. It is known that President Roosevelt has taken a hand in the matter, and directed that nothing be left undone to punish the offenders if a way can be found to do so. Acting Attorney General Hoyt received from Secretary Wilson today the papers in the cotton report investigation. Subsequently the papers were placed in the hands of United States District Attorney Morgan H. Beach, who will probe the whole subject and make a thorough inquiry, embracing every detail connected with the compilation of the statistics involved. Mr. Beach declined to say anything on the subject tonight, but it is understood that the investigation which he will conduct wil! be begun in earnest tomorrow and will cover both the local and administrative features of the incident. Plague and Cholera. Sihin^hai. Manchuria, July 13 ? Qaiet continues along the front, but the Japanese are still moving in Korea. Information from the Jap anese lines indicates that the rack and file are exceedingly anxious for peace to counteract this feeling. Oyama is continually issuing glowing appeals to the patriotism of his armies. The Chinese say decaying corpses buried in shallow graves in the frozen ground after the battle of Mukden have created a terrible condition. Plague and cholera are said to have appeared among the Japanese. Florence, Williamsburg and Darlington have joined the counties who want a vote on the dispensary. A. M.
