"The agitation for an election to include the suburb of Brookland, in Lexington county, into Columbia has not died out, and it is expected that a formal petition will be presented iD a few days. There is some opposition on this side of the river now, how ever, on the ground that it would mean a great deal of expense to this city just at present; although the city could get most of the money back in time from taxes. Jusfc now when the city needs a lot of money for the waterworks and other improvements and it would be necessary to eqaip the entire suburb with water plants, a. fire station, electric lights and other improvements. Un ; - ?>?, . LESS THE TOWN WOULD BE WILLING TO WAIT UNTIL THEIR SHARE OF THE \ / TAXES PAID FOR IT, THE IMPROVEMENTS WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED BY THE CITI zens hebe?Columbia Evening Beeord. So there was a "nigger in the wood pile" after all. The Record wants to use the people of Brooklaod as eats? paws to pull its chestnuts out of the fire. It has rang out its Macedonian cry, "Come over the river, ob, ye taxpayers of Brookland, bringing your tithes wifci* you, and help us out, and then in the fullness of time, when Gabriel shall blow his horn, we (will give you "electric lights and other improvement. A burnt child dreads fire and the people of Brookland are content to endure the evils that they know of rather than to fee to those that they known not of, and it is well for them that they have* so decided. The town council at its regular meeting Monday night appointed the following well known gentlemen as a Board of Health, with the terms of their office: Dr. J. J. Wingard, five Ui. T TT. TTonfmonn JOMDt JL/*> V <w- uuuitMwwM) ?v<? pfv^ years; G. M. HarmaD, three years; . Scott Hendrix, two years; Charlie Geiger, one year. The Board met and organized by electing G. M. Harman, Chairman, and Dr. J. E. Kaufmann, Secretary. The Board is clothed with almost unlimited power as regards sanitary conditions, and these men have gone to work in a systematic order and, we are glad to state their hands are upheld and ] their actions endorsed by all peace- 1 ful and law abiding people and they j are receiving the moral and financial < support of the people of Lexington. j Last Sunday was the fortieth an- ! niversary of the surrender of GeD. j Lee at Appomatox.^When the clouds " gathered around that noble band of patriots that day all felt that the principles for which they fought and suffered for four long, weary years | were lost. But not so. Strange to say that the United States Supreme1 Court, a majority of the members of | wincfc are itapubucans, nas ^upneia and sustained every contention of } the Southern Democracy except the doctrine of nullification, so what the * Southern Confederacy lost in warJ they won in peace. i ( Arguments in case of the State 0/ 1 South Carolina vs. the United States ( V x were heard in * the Supreme court of the United States on April 10. The Stats is suing the Federal government for $30,000 which the government, through its internal revenue bureau insisted upon making the State officers pay for wholesale and retail liquor licenses under the operation of the dispensary system. < . In the United States circuit court, in Charleston, on April II* a verdict of $41,639.26 was found against ex 5c Senator John L. McLaurin in a suit brought against him by the International Trust Co, of Baltimore, on a promissory note given while President of the Brunswick and Birmingham railroad and Vice President of the Brunswick and Western Construction Co. The Japs are again moving sgainst the Russians. The greatest land and sea battle yet fought is hourly eipected. Last Monday on Mr. Jobn Buz- j zira'3 place in Saluda county, near Batesburg, in this county, Ed Davis and Jim Ltng, both colored, fell out about a woman, the result being that Jim has about one side of his face shot off and Ed is rusticating in jail. S ne of the discoveries made by the State fish commission is that millions of cans of oysters have been shipped out of the State and this finding was but the result of a single day's work. After a prolonged litigation the Government returns $400,000 paid as taxes during the American-Spanish war by the Yanderbilts. The motto of some men is "give me liberally or give me debt." Unless the mercj^ of God interposes in his behalf, Marion Parr will surely hang in Columbia next Friday for the murder of Clarence Shealy. An At Some Entertainment. Our community has been kept uite lively this season, and no event has been more notable for its entire success than the At Home Birthday entertainment given by Mr. and Mrs W. F. Stabler in honor of their daughter, Miss Annie Stabler, Friday night, March the 31st. Fair maidens and gallant young men gathered from the community and nearby villages. Miss Annie is quite an ideal hostess and all who were fortunate to receive an invitation gladly accepted. Dancing was the principal amusement of the evening. Among those who were so royally entertained were as follows: Messrs. Savior, Jumper, Neal, Assman, D. E. Jefcoat, S. S. Rucker, John Rucker, Harry Rucker, Wilbur Rucker, J. J. Lucas, Rufus Stabler, Willie Wise, B. S Wise, J L. Wise, Y. Y. Saylor, J. W. Cook, Fred Huffman, Frank Stabler, L. G. Stabler, W. D. Special Tas. I wish to say that all school trustees and patrons of the various school districts of the county who desire to vote a special tax for school purposes must do so prior to June 1st, 1905, if such tax is to be collected and used this year. If any are thinking of this matter we urge you to act at once or you may be too late to receive benefit therefrom during scholastic year ending June 30th, 1906. Very respectfully, J E. Raw! Eyzer, County Supt. of Education. Bad Accident. Mr. J. M. Ellisor, from near Newberry, happened to a bad accident Sunday last. He visited friends on iihe south side of Saluda river on Saturday and Sunday and while retaining to his home Sunday his horse became unruly and thre^ Mr. Sllisor out of the buggy and broke loose from the vehicle, ran into the lat at Hclly?s Ferry and jumped Into the river from it and swam icross with its harness on. Mr. Derrick, who was on the opposite fide of the river, caught the horse md brought him back to its owter. Mr. Ellisor patched up the buggy ?8 best he could and drove on bis ivay home.
