THE LEXIN6T0H DISPATCH. Wednesday, February 1, 1905. Ti9 Cure For Worry. Worry is ods of the worst curses of modern life. I. say of modern life, not because people a thousand years go did Dot worry, because as civilization advances men become more highly strung, more sensitive and less capable of detachment. Thus we often say in a very expressive phrase that a thing "gets upon our nerves." Something distressing happens to us, and we cannot shake it iff. Some one treats us rudely, harshly or unkindly, and the word or deed rankles in our minds. We think it over tiil it is magnified into a grievous and intentional insult. We take it to bed with us, and do sooner is the light put out than we begin to recall it and turn over in our minds all thecircum stances that occasioned it. We sleep feverishly, haunted all the time with the sense of something disagreeable. We wake, and the accursed thing is still rankling in our minds. This is one form of worry, which ia very eommon among people of sensitive ^ minds. Another form of worry is the tendency to brood over past errors. The bosiness man or the public man is suddenly overwhelmed wht the conriotlon that be has made an awful * mess of things. The worst of all calamities is the lack of energy to grapple with calamity, and in most oases it is worry that breaks down a man's energy. A third and perhaps more common form of worry is the gloomy anticipation of future calamities. There are some men who, however happy they may be today, are perpetually fright- j ening themselves with the possibilities of a disastrous tomorrow. They 1 ? ? XT7lx onettrtm live in terror. uucu avtuai cwnu? comes upon us most of us discover enexpeoted resources of fortitude in i ourselves. Bat nothing sickens the heart so much as imagined sorrow. j Of this form of worry we may well say, "It's wicked!" I have no doubt that most of my readers know by experience what some of these things mean. No doubt also many of them have many real causes for anxious thought, and they will a6k me how I propose to . deal with it. One of the best ways is to be content to live a day at a time. Sydney Smith counsels us i with rich wisdom to take short views of life. Each day is an entity ia it self. It is rounded off by the gulf of sleep; it has its own hours which will never return; it stands separate, with its own opportunities and pleasures. Make the most of them. Another good and simple' rule is sever to take our griefs to bed with us. "Easy to say, but how difficult to do," will be replied. But it is largely a matter of will aad habit. . * John Wesley once said that he would as soon steal ar worry, for 6ac& was equally as in. Many of our ills are due to ever eating, to eating the wrong things and to irregular eating. Startling but True. People the world over were horrified on learning of the burning of a Chicago theater in which nearly six hundred people lost, their lives, yet more than five times this number or over 3,000 people died from pneumonia in Chicago during the same year, with scarcely a passing notice. Every one of these cases of pneumonia resulted from a. cold and could have been prevented by the timely use of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. A great many who had every reason to fear pneumonia liave warded it off by the prompt use of this remedy. The following is an instance of this sort : "Too much cannot be said ; \ favor of Chamberlain's Cough Remeuy, and especially for colds and influenza: I know that it cured my daughter, Laura, of a severe cold and I believe saved her life when she was tlireatened with pneumonia." There is at ieast seven or eight dollars difference in price in favor of cotton seed, and besides you know that cotton seed is pure and honest goods. ' When our experiment stations make up their tables of comparative commercial or money values of cotton seed in comparison witb commercial fertilizer, . there is usually do mention made of the very important fact that every cotton seed acts as a small reservoir to hold moisture and air during drought, which may exert an influence toward feeding the plant over the concentrated manures that might icouot for one-third of a crop in exj treme cases. The mechanical action of cotton se^ed in keeping the soil opeD and loose to preserve moisture ! and admit air is another advantage. Oar cotton oil mills and chemists tell us that the oil in seed is of no value as a fertilizer, and that it is a loss to put it on land, but it is cheaper for the farmer to lose the oil at home than it is to haul it off to the mills and give it away. The Pride of Lezington Pranks Institutions < One of our most important institutions, and we might truthfully add that, next to the Church, the most important because it that which builds the character of the future citizen, is the Palmetto Collegiate Institute. Tliis institution was chartered by the State Legislature a number of years ago and under the management of Professor Percival Rowell, its first Principal, attained a marked degree of success. On account of its able faculty, high standiards, its excellent moral and educational facilities and the healthfulness of our climate, young men and women were a ttracted here from different sections of the State and entered its doors to fit and prepare themselves to intelligently fight the great battle of life. Its usefulness was ladened with bright promises of great possibilities. But unfortunately Prof. Rowell severed his connection with the Institute n.T?r1 wof?t tri moot liic ^ootl, Since then and up to the time its present head assumed control of its affairs and the direction of its destinies, the Institute languished and in the languishing perished. Its condition went from had to worse and all interest as regards its success as an institution of learning was lost. Such was its condition when Professor Oscar D. Seay was elected Principal. In the darkest hour of its history he entered upon his arduous task with a heart undismayed by the discouraging outlook and a fixed determination to allow no obstacle to stand between him and success. With tliis laudable purpose firmly fixed and with aspirations to build the school up and make out of it an institution of learning second to none in the State he went manfully to work and out of chaos and disorganization he brought system and orgaization and order. He gathered around him some of the brightest minds and talent in the county and infused enthusiasm into his assistants. New interest in the success of the Institute was awakened among our people. In conclusion, we beg to say that 110 better school in the State can be found for the education of the young than the Palmetto Collegiate Institute. Its reasonable tuition; its exequalled facilities: its commodious buildings, its higli moral and intellectual training; its mild, but firm, discipline, added to the proverbial healtlifulness of Lexington and the cheapness of board is a cluster of inducements for children, young men and ladies to attend to obtain that priceless boon?an education.
