: Peace Rejected by Russia.
London, Nov 10?Japan unofficially
has made representations to
Russia looking to peace. Tnis action
has resulted in failure and such representations,
even privately, are not
likely to be repeated by Japan.
Although the suggestion of a pacific
settlement was made unofficially
it actnally had behind it all the
weight of an cffier by thy Japanese
government. It wa9 made direct to
Russia. No power acted as an intermediary.
The proposition was

ally, so that the Japanese government
would be in a position to deny
any report that it was suing for
peace. ! . /.
RECEIVED WITH DISFAVOR.
St. Petersburg, N.?v. 10 ?In official
eireiea LordXansdowne'a veiled sug.
gestion that the Raseo-Japanese
conflict might be settled by arbitration
finds an unfavorable echo. The
sentiment prevails stronger than
?ver that Russia's prestige must be
vindicated before the idea of peace
can be entertained.
' Hopeless as is the idea of bringing
the war to a conclusion it seems,
however, tbat there are those in high
quarters who consider that there is
*b?re possibility of bringing the
eopfiict to a close oa the basis of
arbitration if each a proposition came
:directly from Japan. Russia has
, announced again and again tbat no
/ 4 3
proposition irom an umntereBieu
power would even be answered, but
; that any proposition from Japan
direct, no matter through what intermediary,
would be considered.
A proposal from Japan to arbitrate
the controversy would appeal strongly
to Emperor Nicholas.
' He is extremely proud of being
the author of The Hague conference
and in spite of the difficult position
in which Bussian military prestige
would be left by a cessation of hostilities
lat this juncture those competent
to judge 8Ctual!y entertain
the belief that such an offer on' the
part of Japafo would not be in vain.

Lovely Woman in a Bank.
"If it were not for the women who
have bank accounts,'7 said a paying
teller last week, "the routine of banking
business would be deadly dull."
Several day3 ago a woman went into
the office of the Hamilton Trustcompany
in Brooklyn and asked:
"Is Mr. Hamilton here?"
"No, madam," said the clerk, who
remembered her as a woman who
bad started an account the week
previous.
"Where is he?" askel the woman.
"I don'c know, madam. Mr. Alexander
Hamilton is dead, you know."
"I didn't know it," said tbe woman.
"Ob, dear, I'm so sorry. Now, how

" When the butter won't
come put a penny in the
churn," is an old time dairy
proverb. It often seems to
work though no one has ever
told whv.
When mothers are worried
because the children do not
ffain strength and flesh we
o o
say give them Scott's Emul
sion.
It is like t penny in the
milk because it works and
because there is something
astonishing about it.
Scott's Emulsion is simply
a milk of pure cod liver oil
with some hypophosphiles
especially prepared for delicate
stomachs.
Children take to it naturally'
because they like -the taste
and the remedy takes just as
naturally to the children be
cause it is so perfectly adapted
to their wants.
For all weak and pale and
thin children Scott's Emulsion
is the most satisfactory treatment.
