The Lexington Dispatch i r -'w,teida" | At Home and Abroad. After frills comes bills. ? ' * Some men can't even tell the truth without lying about it. Bp Every stage has its wings, but it f takes an angel to make them flutter, j A girl sometimes encourages one ! man in order to test her love for an- ; other. * P Democrats, do your dutv by going j to the polls on November 8, and vot- j ing for Lever for Congress. I Columbia is fully aroused regard- j 5ng the re establishment of the boat j line between that city and George-1 town. - l The books of registration are dow j closed and will remain so until the first Monday in December succeeding the general election. Court has adjourned leaving a heavy docket untouched. The probability is that an extra term wili be asked for to relieve the congestion. It is said that the National Demor cratic Executive committee wants ' Admiral Schley to stump the country in the interest of Parker and DaviB. Wa are threatened with a water famine and the situation is becoming grave in some localities. Unless we soon get rain man and beast will suffer from thirst. Our advice to laud owners is to ?? The Sonth is confidentslly looking [ ? forward to the defeat of Mr. Roosevelt for the ^Presidency of the United States because he is considered to be j a dangerous person to be given such power as the office carries with it. If the Democrats of the Seventh District will but do their duty on November 8sh by going to the polls and voting for Lever will be our next representative in Congress beyond all peradventure. White men, whom do you wish to represent you in Congress?a white man or a coon? Lever or Jacob*? If you prefer the former then go to the polls on November 8 and vote for Lever. * If you prefer the latter, then in heaven's name don't go near the polls during that day. % E. M. Freeman, a flagman on the Southern road, aged about twenty years, met a tragic death on October 3rd near Spartanburg. He W88 riding on a box car when he struck his head on one of the devices for swinging the mail bags along the road. The family of Mr3. Meetze of Co-1 Iumbi8, were poisoned by eating ice cream, which was favored with eanned pineapple, on Sunday of last week. Among those who were affected were Miss May Meetze and Mr. Meetze Muller, of our town. No one, fortunately, were seriously poisoned.^ Unless there is a commutation of his sentence, Aaron "Williams, the negro rapist at Camden, will be hanged on November 4. The crime took place last June and created much excitement at the time. The assault was committed on a respect- ! able white woman of that community, j Channie W. Reeves, a flagman on the Southern Railway, was killed on Tuesday of last week near Langley, by being run o^er by a train. It is supposed that he was asleep on the track while on duty. He had been j married only a few months prior to ] . his tragic death. Postmaster General Payne died in j Washington on Tuesday of last ! week. The cause of bis death was j heart failure. Iq the death of Sena- ! tor Hoar, of Massachusetts, which j occurred recently, a prominent figure j in American politics has been remov- j ed from the counsels of the nation, j The store of the M. R. Hartley Co., at the Lexington Depot, about a mile from Iowd, was broken into one night last week by thieves, and goods and cash to tbe amount of about $200 were stolen. The entrance was effected by prizing boards from the floor. There is no clue as to the identity of the thieves. Columbia will soon have a clearing bouse association. It is all right for bankers and financiers to pool their interests to contract or expand the currency of the country in order that ail other businesses, other than their owd, might be paralyzed or inflated, as the case may be, but when tbe poor farmers want to combine, under the sub treasury scheme, for instance, it becomes at once un-democratic, anarchism, communism, socialism and all the rest of the isms. It is a mighty poor rule that won't work both ways. > Win. T Latban, cortiaedl in the county j^ii at Camden for several weeks awaitiDg trial for assault with intent to kill, was tri^d and convicted on October third. When taken back to jail, before sentence was passed, he committed suicide by taking two ounces of lysol, a poisonous disinfectant which he had at the time. The Pinkerton detective, who has been employed on the Maude Allen case claim that the unfoitunate woman came to Columbia from Raleigh, N C. where she was 8n inmate of a house of ill-fame; that her muiderer i3 a printer bv trade and a gambler by profession. He cannot be located. And here the matter will probably remain an unsolved mystery to the end of time. There are several proposed ameDCmeats to the State Constitution fco be submitted to the people in the general election, among which is the bi* ennail sessions of the Legislature proposition. A safe rule to foilow is to vote "NO*' on all of tbem. It is a dangerous precedent to establish to interfere with the organic law of the State. It makes one lose confidence in the sacredness of thsfc instrument. Because Wtlliam Floyd refused to loan William Morrison 10 cents, the latter shot aod mcrtaliy wounded the former at Kershaw, in Lancaster county on Saturday of la9t week and while the djing man begged for hie life he was shot again as he breathed his last. This made the fourth victim that has fallen at the crack of Morrison's handy pistol. The slayer was put in the calaboose of the town ''aDd' that night he was taken out by an indignant crowd, carried out of town, hung with pair of buggy lines and several shots fired into bis body." mi . u ~ l ? r JL LltJ I eaouu 1\JL IUD ui UiUin eon 13 attributed to the failure of the juries to convict for the previous murders charged to his account. "Ephriam i* wedded to bis idol," and the ''City Fathers" of Columbia have declined to give its citizens pure water and as a conerqueace they will have to continue the use of Broad river mud or be forced to purchtsa drinking water from private springs around Columbia. The commission recently appointed to ii quire into the merbe of Congaree creek water aDd Broad river mud soup has made a report favorable to the latter soleiy upon the ground that it would be cheaper. It has come to a pretty pass when the consideration of cost outweighs the consideration of the health of the people of a place. In our judgment, at least, such a consideration is an exhibition of penny wise and pound foolish. Insomnia and Indigestion Cured "Last year I had a very severe attack of indigestion. I could not sleep at night and suffered most excruciating pains for three hours after each meal. I was troubled this way for about three months when I used Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tabletp, and received immediate relief," says John Dixion, Tullamore, Ontario, Canada. Gorman is 8aid to be very weii pleased with the political outlook and is quoted as saying that the campaign this year reminds him very much of the campaign of 1892. In that year there was much apathy on both sides, the candidates being Cleveland and Harrison, and the politicians were all at sea as to the outcome of the selection. Wonderful Statistics.
