Rome, Sept. 2 ?A Tokio dispatch says that General Kuropatkin has ordered all the villages about Liao Yang burned to prevent the Japanese from getting supplies which are stored there. Four villages have already been destroyed. Thousands of ?^L.churians are homeless. The Japa-- 3 secured 21,700 riflas about Liano Yang which the Russians cast away during yesterday's retreat. The Russian losses about Liao Yang since Tuesday are estimated at 10,000 killed and wounded. Tho Scuppernong Grape. The United StateB Department of Agriculture is investigating the scoppernong grape with a view to determining the beet varieties, methods of culture, pruning, training, etc., as well as the uses to which the fruit can be put. One of the features of this investigation which is con sidered of particular importance is the locating of vines of this type, either wild or in cultivation, that are known to excel in productiveness, size, color or quality of fruit, or in Borne other important particular. la this connection, the Yiticulturist of the Bureau of Plant Industry, who has the work in charge, will be glad to receive reports on such vines from persons who know of their existence, stating the facts regarding them and the points of special merit that have been observed in them. Correspondence regarding such vines should be addressed to Geo. C Husmann, Yiticulturist, Bureau of Plant Industry, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, D. C. The Department will, upon application, furnish special mailing boxes and franks with which specimens of choice varieties can be forwarded to the Yiticulturist for examination, , without cost to the sender. Senator Latimer was expected early in the day, and though a wagonette was sent to the railway station several times to meet him, he could not be found. It seems that by some ill fortuD3 Senator Latimer and the Judge's ve j hide failed to connect, and the Senator wandered along the road on foot in the direction of Judge Parker'd residence. E9 lost his bearing, however, and went to the farm of E. Z. Parker, who is no relation of the Democratic nominee. Here Senator Latimer and a bull dog became involved in a difficulty. Tne Senator eecaped without serious damage and was soon set on the right road to Judge Parker's residence. Senator Latimer opens the campaign in Chenango county. - ?? - ? Three Jurors Cured Of Cholera Morbus with One Small Bottle of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. Mr. G. W. Fowler, of Hightower, Ala, relates an experience he had while serving on a petit jury in a murder case at Eiwardsville, county eeat of Clebourne county, Alabama. On Wednesday last, at 1:30 o'clock, one of the prettiest weddings of the season took place in Harrisonville, Augusta, Ga. The contracting parties were Mrs. Emmie M. It has been planned to make this part of tho greater fair more of a success than ever before, and the strictest Bort of scrutiny will be made of all shows before the applications are acted on favorably. There have been a number of letters received from the carnival companies who either desire space on the grounds or up in the city. As it is nearly time for the City Fair association to hold its annual meeting just ' before the fair, these will be referred to the association for their action. The members of the city council are, as a rule, opposed to any more street privileges to street shows. No new developments in the Maude Allen and the young Shealy murder mysteries, have come to the surface since our last issue. This j land, as we understand, lies along the j Southern Extension Railway, about j nine miles from this place, in the sandflats, the most fertile section of Lexington county, the garden spot of the world. These people, it is said, will engage in truck farming on an ex tensivescale for the home and foreign markets. These people are said to be by persons acquainted with their habits and customs and their mode of living, honest, industrious and law abinding and as a whole, a very desirable class of immigrants.
