Co the Editor of the Dispatch: Sometime ago I was drawing water .bout dark. There was one bucket oh he chain and the vacant end of the it ?as down in the well. I lifted elf the rncket and was letting the chain pass hrough my hand rapidly. About he time the bucket was was nearly lown something passed through my lands and made a piss at the back >f my hand, but passed off without ioing me injury. I grabbed the :hain btlow with the other hand and hen I saw the ''something cold" was i snake. I called to my daughter to )ring me the lamp and tongues. I Irew him out with the tongues and ;illed him. I laid him aside till the iext morning and when I examined lim I found him to be a rattlesnake kbout two feet long. A few days later I was 5oming from the fit Id I saw some, hing crossing the road. When I jot a little nearer I got me a medium ;ized stick. By that time the snake vas crawling into the ditch beside he roadside. I struck one and a lalf feet from its tail doing very title damage. He made his way up the >ank of the drain. I made haste down >elow and stepped into the drain md made another pass at it. This ick struck it about two feet from the lead. Tjc snake then threw itself iown agaia into the ditch, and fell iboufc a foot from me, with its head \ oward me. My stick had broken <?hen I made the last pass, leaving ae a piece about a foot long and bout the size of my thumb. I [lickiy bent forward and struck the nake's head, paying no attention to he tail. I took it up on the stick nd carried it to the house and laid it Iown in the yard, not yet p*jingany ttention tc the other end, except to iotice that it kept throwing its tale round. It was badly wounded by he first blow. I then made a furher examination and found that it ,ad a horn or a thorn, which ever it aight be. Mr. Herman Kleckley ame along and also examined his nakeship. He amputated the horn nd carried it off with him. The nake was about six feet four inches a length and about 8 inches in ciru inference. Two or three day9 after I went Iown in my pasture where I had a lathing place. It was getting about lark, and while preparing to take a >atb I chanced to look down on the ;rouud and saw something move. I tepped back and got a stick, and hen me and "it" had a race for the rater's edge, but the race proved faal for the snake. I struck it and ;illed it. It was a water rattle about wo feet long. I was like unto Danel when he was cast into the den of ions. But this is not the first time hat Swansea Farmer has been tested.
