J. E Steele. The Chain Gang. We understand that the chain gang is now located near the town of Bateeburg and is doing some excellent work on the roads in that vicinity. Capt. Jake Bickiey is certainly the right man in the right place aDd the quality of the road work he is doing speaks for i'self. Magistrates having convicts for the gaDg will find it in the vicinity of Bateeburg. i --f -Li-. The program will consist of recitations, songs acd dialogues by the students and addresses by some prominent public speakers. There will be a picnic dinner on the grounds and everybody is requested to come prepared to make this part of the program a pleasure. Come up, Mr. Editor, and spend the day with us and see what our people are doing. Lloyd. Delmar, S. C, April 18, 1904. Let|gr to Allen Jones. Columbia, S C. J "~t"5 points is 300 square feet, two coats. It's a lie, as a rule Devoe covers 300 to 500, our agents tbiok. We think 300 too low 500 too high; though doubtless, they both occur. How much the other paints cover is equally doubtful; we guess 100 to 400. The truth is found in another comparison. Devce is all paint, true paint, strong paint, and f ill-meaeur<; the others in general are, at the best, diluded, adulterated and short-measure. They cove?* according to bodv and measure. You can'o paint with clay, lime, cbolk, sand, boryte?. water or air?no body in them. Go by Devoe. Tours trulv, F. W. Devce & Co , New York. P. S The KaufmaDn Drug Co, sells our paint. Mrs. Hawl Sick. It was reported on our streets last Wartnoorlflv th?f. Mrs. Fmmaline Raw), of Batesburg, was critically ill, and Mr. James E Rawl and Mrs. Scottie HaimaD, of this place, a eon and daughter of this venerable lady, left for that place Thursday. Happily to eay thai on arriving there they found their mother much improved. Saster Items. To the Editor of the Dispatch: As you seldom come in our section I will say that there are many improvements made in and around Baxter. Mr. J. P. Copeland has completed his handsome residence and has moved into it. The paint brush has been applied to it. The residence of the late Dr. J. K. Kne^ce and the drug store of Dr. W. L Kneece have received their finishing touches. Dr. W. L Kneece is kept busy day aDd night attending to his large practice. The farmers are about through i planting corn and many have planted some cotton seed. Corn is coming up to a fine stand where the crows and moles do not visit too often. The largest amount of fertilizers ever known is being used in our sec tion. The grain crop although small is looking very well. We have a free rural delivery from Batesburg now carried by our friend, W. A. Bawl, who seems to ei)joy it very much, and we are anxious for 12 o'clock to come so that we can get our mail. We are very thankful to j j Uncle Sam for this kindness. Also j | to our true and tried friend Lever ! for his masterly ffforts for us. We hear that Batesburg has a case ! or two of small pox Well, that | scares u?, and I hope they will keep , them at heme. We now have a flourishing Sunday i ; school at Hulon every Sunday afterj noon at 3 p m. The fruit crop will be very short i with ns hnt we are hankincr on our I gooseberry and blackberry crop, with ; an occasional huckleberry pie and I honey thrown in for good measure. I Now, Mr. Editor, in your rounds i with candidate and barbecues call on ; us and we will divide crust with you ! aDd show you our monarch stump [ puller and where we keep our fish. : We will furnish the poles and boat i if you will bring your tackle and we'll try ocr luck with the fiDny tribe, j With best wishes for the Dispatch and all the candidates, I am, yours, !
