SPPPMM??p? The Lexington Dispatch. Wednesday, March 3, 1904. Work on the Farm. The secretary of agriculture and Prof. W. J Spillman have notified Mr.' F. H. Hyatt of the varieties of seed they desired planted on the diversification farm which is to be conducted on 100 seres of land just north of the city and work has already started on the soil which is boa ^ prepared for the seed. The actu*. work will commence about March 15th and Professor Spillman or a JKd rtrttjarnmont mill r^pr^BCUlCIUYC U1 bUU gwoiuujuuv *?*?* visit Columbia from time to time to inspect the progress of the work. It is expected that a special kind of seed cotton will be planted, not for the purpose of experimenting, but to 6how what can be done with it on this land. In addition to this several acres will be put in early corn, several in peas, early and late peanuts, tomatoes, asparagus, sweet corn, melons, late peas and other vegetables. Special attention will be paid to the planting of alfafa, which is said to be splendid for feeding cattle and is advocated by the department just now. No estimate has been made of the profit that will be made on the farm has been given out yet, but it will be a handsome one. Catarrh Cannot be Cured with local applications, as they cancot reach the seat of the disease. Catarrh is a blood or constitutional disease, and m order to core it you must take internal remedies. Hall's Catarrh Cure is taken internallv, and i "' acts directly on the blood ana mucous surfaces. Hall's Catarrh Cure is not a quack medicine. It was prescribed by one of the be3t physicians in this country for years and is a regular prescription. It is composed of the best tonics known, combined with the best blood purifiero, acting diretly on the mucous surfaces. The sheriff of Gteenville was informed by the governor this morning that cock fighting was not allowed in this state and that it was his duty to stop any fight of which he heard. ^ i n* a xne governor received a long distance message from Sheriff Gilreath stating that he had heard that there was to be a fight in the county and that he wanted to know his duty in the matter. The following telegram was sent by the governor to the sheriff: "Section 298 of the criminal code makes it a misdemeanor to engage in cock fighting within three miles of any chartered institution of learning and section 625 of the criminal code also does the same. It behooves you as a state officer to use every effort to prevent it." There have been a number of cock fights in the upper part of the State near the North Carolina line and one killing resulted from the sport The Name Witch Hazel. The name Witch Hazel is much. E. C. Wade, in a cablegram to the war department, dated Manilla, advises the department of a report of Gen. Wood concerning an engagement at Jolo, on the 14th of February, with the remnants of Hassan's Cofcta Moros. The American expedition was in charge of Msjor Hugh L. Scott. During the fight Gen. Wood states firing was twice stopped to give the Moros a chance to surrender, but they declined. The entire body he add?, with the excep tion of Hassan, is either dead or captured, and R West, 18:h battery, field artillery, was severely wounded in the thigh. A number of troopers also were wounded. It is said at the war department that the destruction of Hassan's band is a case of retributive justicf. Mb]'. Scott suffered at the hands of this fanatical Moro. The chief enticed the major off into the jungle, pretending to be friendly and shot him from ambush. Since that time I Major Scott has been on his trail and has now destroyed his band. Hassan, who was a priest, is one of the irreconciliables. Proper Trtatment of Pneumonia. One of the most remarkable cases of a cold, deep-seated on the lungs, causing pneumonia, is that of Mrs. Gertrude E. Fenner, Marion, lad, who was entirely cured by the use of One Minute Cough Case. The dog tax will not be collected this year. The law was passed providing for a tax on all dogs for the sum of 50c. for each and every dog. The tax was supposed to be under the control of the tax department in the comptroller general's office, and today he examined the act which has been approved by the governor. It was ascertained that the law provided no machinery for the collection of the tax and consequently it is a dead letter so far as this year is concerned. Defended the Treaty.
