The Ledngtcn Dispatch. Wednesday, December 30,1903. Wholesale Slaughter. The Duquesne Flyer Wrecked and 63 Are Dead. Connellsville, PaM Dec. 24 ?With a terrific crash and grinding noise, the DuqueaLe limited. tne fast through passenger train from Pittsburg toNsw York on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, ploughed into a J pile of lumber at Laurel Run, two ) miles west of Daweor, at 7.46 o'clock ! thin flvenin^. aud it is estimated that i 63 Uvea wtre lo&t and 30 were injured. The train left Pittsburg itiis evening, running a few minutes late, in charge of Engineer Win. Thornley, of Connellsville. When approacbiog Laurtl Ran, which is a particularly line piece of roadbed, the train was running at a high-rate of speed. Suddenly the passengers were thrown from their seats by the lightning-like application of the airbrakes and a moment later there was a terrific crash. The train was made up of two baggage care, two day coaches, one sleeper and one dining car and was carrying at the time, at the lowest estimate, 150 passengers. The train ploughed along for a considerable distance and the cars were torn to pieces, passengers jumping, screaming, falling from the wreck as it tore alGng. Suddenly the engine swerved to the left and the coaches plunged down over the embankment to the edge of the Yougbiogheny river. Tne minute the cars stopped U hfipnp. \f?nV [Utuu^ IUUI u nwu > " - J persons were pinioned beneath fche wreckage and the screams and cries that rent the air were beyond description. " Many were injured in their mad excitement and plunged into the river. Others, caught beneath the heavy timbers, pleaded in agonized tones for relief. So terrific was the force of the wreck that nearly every passenger suffered a moment's unconsciousness and many of the able bodied men were unable to assist in helping the injured from the wreck on accouut of having fainted. The wreck was caused by the breaking of castings on a car load of bridge timbers, on a westbound freight train which bad passed Laudel Run Dot moie than fifteen minutes before the ill-fated passenger train. The wreck occurred on a curve and it was impossible for the engineer to see far enough ahead to detect the obstruction on the tracks. One Hundred Dollars a Sos Is the value H. A.
