Mi68 Martha, the beautiful daughter of Mr. John Hite, was married to Mr. Berley Roof in the presence of a large number of the friends of the contracting parties, by the Rev. J. A. Cromer. Their attendants were as follows: Mr. Walker Hite and Miss Bessie Sims, Mr. Simon Mathias and Miss Hattie Sharps, Mr. Morgan Caughman and Miss Laura Hite, Mr. George Kaiser and Miss Dolly Taylor. The bride wore a beautiful purple gown trimmed with cream silk and white lace and the groom wore a suit of a light color. The happy couple made a charming picture as they stood before the man of God and ?lighted their troth. The brides * ? - I'Wk r? maids, were attired in white and the groomsmen in black. After the ceremoney the bridal party worshipped at St David's, aDd then returned to the home of Mr. Hite, where a sumptoons dinner was served. Mr. Roof and bride will make Irene their future home, and they have the best wishes of their friends for their happiness and prosperity. S. J. M. The Z-Bays. To the Editor of the Dispatch: EaviDg had occaeion lately to go over the tax returns, I was agreeably surprised with what I discovered. Report has it that the people of the county were bad in debt and their property heavily mortgaged. The tax returns, I am pleased to state, do not confirm the report. The credits in Fork townships are, in round numbers, seven thousand dollars. I think thiB an excellent showing. It will not do to say that our people have made a false return under oath to rob the State out of its iust tax. The money we bear of is cot in sight, so there is not much difference after all. Let us all get together and make a long and strong pull for good roads. I stand ready to .prove that it will cost any man fifty dollars a year that runs a two-horse wagon in connection with bis crop, and if he runs a wagon si! the time mnch more, to keep bad roads. The farmers of this State would save in five years three times the cost of putting the roads in good condition. Success to good roads. J. H Counts. Irmo, S. C., April 24, 1903. Washington, April 20.?The specimen of the new two-peso note for the Philippine Islands, received at the War Department from the bureau of engraving and printing, looas much like the two-dollar silver certificate in general circulation in the UQitsd States, although it has much finer lathe work on the back, where there is a single figure "2" surrounded by an intricately drawn scroll. The front of the note contains as a center piece a portrait of Jose Bizal and the signature of Gov. Taft. The printing of tha currency will go forward as rapidly as the regular work of the bureau will permit. There has been a great demand from collectors for samples of the new Philippine coins. So far not a single piece has gone out of the gov' ernmenfc mints at Philadelphia and San Francisco, except the single set in the posession of the insular bureau of the War Department. This set has been frequently examined and offers of as high as $500 have been made for it. A communication has been addressed to Gov. Taft requesting I permission to place a limited number AT a of the coins on sale in New York city. The gets of four coins would be eold at $2 each. To the Editor of the Dispatch: The health of our community is very good at this writing. Mr. John Shealy and family spent Sunday with Mr. Cephas Sease. Miss Leila Lindler is spending this week with her sister, Mrs.' Jessie Drafts. A very large congregation attended services at Mt. Pleasant Sunday. The members of Beulah church are preparing to have a children's day tbe latter part of the summer. This writer took a fiying trip to Batesburg one day last week. The cotton and com are trying t o come up, but the stands are rather poor. Miss Lula Sease spent Saturday and Sunday with her brother, D. P. Sease. The weather is very cool and changeable, but we hope to have warmer weather again. Misses Inez and Katie Black are coming home in the near future. We will welcome them. April 27tb, 1903 Belle. I hope they are not injured so bad everywhere. Ever^ where I can bear from, the farmers are saying, "have you planted cotton yei?"' Next fall, when cotton is five cents, be will be heard to say, "I wish I hadn'i planted so much cotton and some more corn. The gardens in this section were looking fine until the frost of the other night left its mark upon the terder plants. With it came a gale and a decided drop in the murcury. The temperature yesterday was 80 ?nd today it was 47. Big Haul in Columbia. Columbia special of April 25 to the News and Courier: Last night, in the suburbs of Columb:a, the dispensary contables 6eized 248 gallons of good liquor in an old-time wagon. The horse, wagon and liquor were all sent to the state dispensary. The liquor was intended for one of the large "tigers" in Columbia. Incidentally it may be noted that there has been considerable improvement in the local conditions and that there is a very little "blind tigering" going on in Columbia. Governor Heyward continues to receive pretty good reports from the state at large. Quick Arrest. J. A.
