Principle Shot fey Pupil.

Anderson, April 2?Mr. J. F.
Harper, principal of the school at
Lowndesyille, was shot twice this
afternoon by one of the pupil?, but
will recover.
He had notice that some of the
larger boys were going to absent
themselves from school yesterday od
account of it being All Fool's day
and warned them not to do so.
The boys stayed away from school
as they had threatened and this
afternoon the teaoher kept them in
after school to punish them. He
began on James Latimer, a boy 17
years, and Latimer produced a rod 1
of iron from his clothing and began
to resist. 1
This was taken away from him,
when he pulled a Smith & Wesson 1
pistol and opened fire on the teacher. 1
The first shot hit a button on Mr. 1
Harper's coat and the bullet and 1
the button both penetrated the flesh. ^
Then a second shot was fired which *
struck a rib, inflicting a flesh wound (
It was at first thought that Harper
was mortally hurt, but the physicians 1

Latimer fled. Young Latimer is a 1

son of Mr. J. T. Latimer, a promi- 1
nent merchant of that place, and 1
nephew of Senator Latimer.

Tourist Hotel. 1
Steps have been taken to secure a
charter for Batesburg's new hotel,
which is to be built for the accommodation
of northern tourists. The inn
will be known as the "Summerland
Hotel company," and the capital
stock will be $*25,000. The gentlemen
interested in the application for
a char ter are Asah P. Cnilds of Bennington,
Vt; F. W. Chiids of Brattleboro,
Vt.; J. Wm. Mitchell of
Batesbarg, and A. G. LaMotte of j
Columbia.
The Strange Story of a Child.

Mr. Henry Neese, who resides near
Swansea, in this county. The incident
was known to the Dispatch

crying, and going to the door found
lying on the piazza in a basket a
young infant boy of about 1J years
of age. The baby was clothed well
and seemed to have been born of
prosperous parents. In addition to
the clothes which covered it, the
basket contained besides three fine
coats laden with embroidery and laces
and a complete outfit of wearing apparel
for the child.
"A note accompanied the straoge
package, containing the information
that the boy was fond of condensed
milk, and had also been raised on
fruit. A number of apples and
oranges were in the basket. The
message was well written and was
iigned simply 'Lima Smith.'
"Inquiry was made, but no .information
could be obtained as to where
the baby came from. No trains pass

The contract for the erection of
the building which will be occupied
by the American Cirgar Company at
Greenville, S. C., has been awarded
to David W. and George W. Ebaugh,
the price to be approximating $21,000.

State the Supervisor lets out certain
sections of the roads by contract to
be kept up. If tb?-y are not kept up
the contractor receives no pay. This
plan ought to work well if properly
carried out.

where he went in search of two witnesses
to the Hill will, which fell

Six cars of the local freight on the
C. N. & L. railroad were derailed
near Hilton, on Wednesday afternoon
of last week. No one was injured
although some of the cars were con

town of Branchville, S. C, met recently
for the purpose of organizing

A Disappointment.
Lutheran Visitor, April 2nd.
The editor of the Visitor made a
visit to Lexington county, S. C, last
week in order to preach at Bethlehem,
the church of his chilhood and
early manhood, but was prevented
from doing so on account of the
