Ttie Lexington Lispatd) Wednesday, January 28, 1903. Batesburg Notes. To the Editor of the Dispatch: Since I wrote last the "matrimonial alliance" has flourished in our town. On a pretty Sabbath afternoon, Bev. Dr. Wilkins was aroused trom his study and beheld at the door Mr. James Whittle and Miss Claudie Bikard. Their misson soon became known and calling the members of the household to witness the pleasant ceremony, the Doctor proceeded to unite them in the marriage state. I One beautiful evening the Mefcbo diet church was tastefully decorated, a large number of friends assembled and accompanied by handsomely dressed gentlemen and beautifully gowned ladies, Miss Emma Bawl and Mr. S. B. Oartlege presented themselves* at the chancel, and Bey. E. T Hodges read the marriage ceremony and pronounced the happy twin one in life's tempestous voyage Again, at the Baptist ohurcb, after ? L:.L l:_L ft few weeKs, expectancy wmcu uigutened the interest, the marriage of Hiss Eva Jones, daughter of the Xayor of onr town, to Prof. D. W. Daniel of Glemson College, was solemnized. Dainty fingers had spent days in festooning the chureb, decorations in every conspicious place, were arranged. , The time was high noon, the shades were down, the room darkened and numbers of can dies let their tiny lights ill amine the seene. Mendlesshon's wedding march burst forth; urshersin regal attire advanoed up the aisles. Bev A. J. S. Thomas, of Greenville, and Bev. W. W. Daniel, of the Columbia Female College, took their positions. Several gentlemen attendants, with an equal number of magnificently dressed young ladies, proceeded noiselessly to their positions, wben Mayor Jones, with his lovely daughter leaning on his arm, met the groom at the altar where an impressive ceremony, the two distinguished divines plighted the troth of their two hearts for better or worse during the uncsrtaintainties of life. But the Scriptures clearly says the feasting and mourning go hand in * hand and hardly had the rattle of the - earriages of the bridal partyjoeased when the bell of the Methodist church tolled out the solemn funeral dirge. Mrs. W. A. Crouch, who has suffered long and patiently, succumbed to the power of the fell destroyer at 3 o'clock this morning. Her pastor, the Bev. 2. T. Hodges, preached her funeral, and the now lies in the City of the Dead to await the resurrection morn Col. G. T. Graham passed through town yesterday. He is industriously working up the electric line and we trust he will be suecessrut, ana tnai whatever route is taken Bate&burg offers more business to the road than any point yet mentioned therewith. The Till man-God ziles tragedy in Columbia caused the most profound sensation in this community that I can recall in memory. Occasional. January 23J, 1903. * One Hundred Hollars a Bos Is the value H. Kaufmann Drug Co. A Bashful Bridegroom. A friend sends us the following story: "When I was young I was the most bashful boy west of the Allegbanies. I wouldn't look at a girl, mnch lees speak to a maiden; bat for all that I feel desperately in love with a aweefc beautiful neighbor girl. It was a desirable match on both aides, and the old folks saw the drift and fixed it up. I thought I should die thinking of it. I was a gawky, awkward country lout, about 19 years of age; ebe a refined and fairly well eduoated girl in a country and at a time when girls had eupel _ <- * >; x ,3......... V ' "J ? A y - A_ *A ._ rior advantages, and were, therefore, superior in 2ulture to the boys. I | fixed the day off as far as I could have it put. I lay awake in cold ! perspiration as the time drew near ; and I shivered with agony as I I thought of the terrible ordeal. The dreadful day came; I went through the program somehow in a dozed, confused, mechanical way; the guests one by one departed, and my hair began to stand on end, felt like fleeing to the woods, or spending the night in the barn, or leaving for the West never to return. I was deeply | devoted to Sallie; I loved her harder | than a mule can kick; but that dread [ ful ordeal I could not, I dare not | stand it. Finally the last guest was f gone, the bride retired, the family gone to bed, and I was left with the old man. JohD, said he, 'you can take that candle; you will find your I room just above this. Good night John, and may the Lord have mercy on your soul, and with a mischievous twinkle of the eye the old man left , the room. When I heard him slam a distant door I staggered to my feet and seized the candle with a nervous grasp. I knew that it could not be avoided, yet I hesitated to meet my fate like a man. A happy tbonght struck me. I hastily climbed the stairs, marked the position of the landing and the other door of the bridal chamber. I could have disrobed in that holy chamber, where awaited me a trembling girl. I therefore decided to make the nsual preparations without, blew out the light, open the door and friendly darkness would at least mitigate the horror of the situation. It was soon done,, the dreadful moment bad come, I was ready, I blew out the light, grasped the door-knob with a deathly and nervous grasp. One moment and it would be over. I leaped within and there, around a glowing hickory fire, with candle brightly burning on ih* bur-au, waB the blushing bride surrounded by the six lovely bridesmaid?!" After the president had signed the bill, Secretary Root delivered a brief speech of congratulation on the enactment of so excellent a measure. General Dick, the author of the bill, and the president of the national guard association, made a fitting response. President Roosevelt then spoke of the merits of the bill. He expressed the hope that no president e^cr would be confronted by such an emergency as would render it necessary for him to avail himself of the services of the troops provided for in the bill, but congratulated the committee and the country on its enactment, t nd said be regarded the citizen soldiery of the nation as a most important factor in the protection of the country.
