Mr. Paul E. Hutto, a prominent; and live business man of Swansea, j was in town Monday and gave us a pleasant call. Mr. C. W. Sollee, of Batesburg, : was fined $500 or to serve one year : on the chain gang by Judge Danlzier at the Skluda term of the court for shooting Hon. E. L. Asbill. He has appealed. Yesterday Sheriff Caughman arrested Levi Pitts, alias Wallace, on a warrant charging him with violat ing a contract jn Newberry county. I He was arrested on the Aunt Harriet Birman place. A negro tamed Joe Coleman, who resides at this place but works at j Bate3burg, was arrested last Saturday by constable P. H. Coiley, charged with breaking into a railroad car and stealing therefrom a ! lot of whiskey consigned to the dispenser at this place. He is now in Jail awaiting trial. Mr. Samuel J. Leaphart has received bis appointment aspostmastar at this place, succeeding bis father, the late Dr. C. E. Lesphart. Mrs. J. H. Hope is now behind the counters of the dry goods department of W. P. Roof, ready to give customers polite attention. A fine selection of Christmas goods, such as fruits, candies, nucs, raisins and other good things to eat for the holidays, at Meetze & Son. Shooting matches are now the pastime every Saturday afternoon. Many a fine gobbler has changed hands as the result of these matches. Mr. and Mrs. Willie and Estelle Blume, of Columbia, visited the parents of the latter, Mr. and Mrs. A. Marks, in this place Saturday and Sbnday. There will be a Christmas tree at Providence Lutheran church on the 27th inst. The exercises will begin at 12 o'clock sharp. Everybody is invited to attend. On his way from Conference to his field of labor in the Master's vineyard Rev. Sam Bailey stopped over several days to visit bis brothers and other relatives near this place. Mr. Jales A. Krentalin, formerly of this place, but now of Washington, D. G, was in town several days this week visiting relatives of his wife and shaking hands with friends. Rev. Ike N. Stone, a member of the South Carolina Conference of the Methodest Episcopal Church, South, came over on his way from Conference and spent several days during the week with relatives and friends. While hewing a trough from a log last Saturday, Mr. Gas Lorick was painful injured in the foot by his adze slipping on a chip and Btriking his heel. The leader was severed. Mr. J. E. Bailey has just finished up a nice neat double-seated buggy which he is offering for sale cheap. Anyone needing a vehicle of this class should call and see him and he will give you a bargain. Their stock if large, their goods the best and theii prices the lowest. Cards are out announcing the marriage- of Miss Hattie Virginia daughter of Mr. Eli Corley to Mr Walter Caugbman. The ceremony is to take place in St. Stephen's church, on Thursday evening December 25th, at 7, o'clock. We regret to learn that Thomas, the 13 year-old son of Mr. Joseph Rauch met with a fatal accident at his father's home near Chapin last Sunday. He was drawing water from the well when the chain parted causing him to lose his balance and fall into the well.
