In our style of climate, with its sudden changes' of temperature,? rain, wind and sunshine often intermingled in a single day,?it is no wonder that our children, friends and relatives are so frequently taken from us by neglected colds, half the deaths resulting directly from this cause. Craps was in town Monday and informs us that on account of the illness of the Captain and the guard, the chain gang has not been able to do much work on the public roads recently. There are now only six convicts, and the term of one will soon expire. The gang is now in the neighborhood of Leesville, but next week it will be turned over to Commissioner Hallman for work on his section. It's a Whopper. While Dr. Blue Mountain Joe is at home trying to keep his watermelon vines from roaming all over creation and his corn from reaching the skies, Mr. Wessinger is now carrier of the mail from here to Stall. The Doctor swapped seeds with Pat Bickley and it is said that the watermelon vines of Pat are darning up his branch, while the corn of Dr. Blue Mountain Joe is so high?and still growing? that it shades the crops of his neighbors on all sides of him. Besides being an avowed candidate for the Legislature, we judge by the way he was shaking hands with the girls and casting sheep eyes at them, he must also be a candidate for matrimony and being very popular, he issure to be elected. COMMENTS ON The Candidacy of Dr. W. H. Timmerman, of Batesburg, South Carolina, for Governor. What Others Say of Him. From the Lexington Dispatch: Dr. "W. H. Timmerman, the mo9t prominent Candidate for Governor before the people today, was in town Monday. The doctor is hale and hearty, and is fully identified with the people of Lexington among whom he has cast hie lot for weal or woe. He is doing a good part in the development of Lexington by the investment of his brains, energy and capital and Lexington appreciates his elf jrts. The Batesburg Advocate says of the above: The Dispatch is exactly right in the above case. There is not a man living in South Carolina who would add more honor and reflect greater credit to the State than Dr. W. H. Timmerman. In every department of life, he has acted his part well, and stands before the people of this State, as the noble Roman whose best thought and time has been given to his people. If there are those who doubt the fact of Dr. Timmerman being a formidable candidate, jhey had better change their way of thinking. He has friends in every section, who are among the leading people in influence. We are banking on Dr. Timmerman as our next Governor. From Another: Both of the above papers are right when they say that Dr. Timmerman is an upright, clean, able and pure man. He would reflect the highest credit upon the State as its Chief Executive, upon himself and upon his past life. We know and have heard nothing in his life which can be urged against him and there is much that is honorable and creditable. We would be satisfied if he were elected. From the Edgefield Advertiser: W. H. Timmerman, President of the First National Bank of Batesburg, was in Edgefield Monday, attending the Annual Meeting of the Stockholders of the Farmers Bank. Though Dr. Timmerman has moved beyond the confines of Edgefield County, she is proud of his clean public and official record. Dr. Timmerman is an avowed candidate fo? Gubernatorial honors. From the Edgefield Chronicle: An old and honored friend, the Hon. W. H. Timmerman of Batesburg, has virtually announced himself a candidate for Governor of South Carolina. Edgefield loves him well, and welcomes him cordially into the field. Edgefield has every cause to love and honor W. H. Timmerman. He has served well and wisely in many public positions with clean hands and patriotic heart. And as he has served Edgefield, so he has served South Carolina. From the Edgefield Monitor: Dr. Timmerman has announced his intention to be a candidate for Governor in the primary this year. Dr. Timmerman is well known in this State as a cultured, refined and able man; not only this, he has a reputation as being one of the safest and best business men and financiers in the State. He has a record of many years of public service which is clean and without stain?upright, honest and fearless. He will no doubt make a close race. The Batesburg Advocate announces, Dr. W. H. Timmerman of that place, who was formerly Lieutenant Governor and late State Treasurer, has entered the race for Governor and that he T?;n ho in to t.Hfl finish. Dr. Timmerman is a good man and no TT III W * ?? ? - w doubt will receive a large vote.?The Bamberg Timee. From a correspondent of the Florence Times: We have just reviewed the record of eminent services, rendered bis County and State in various responsible positions by Dr. Timmerman, our former State Treasurer. We are not surprised to hear calls for him to the Governor's chair. Fully qualified by intelligence and experience, faithful and efficient as his services have proved, with a character above suspicion and reproach, why should he not b8 called to this nigh office, and fill it in that high-toned, dignified manner that characterizes him and fits him for the office of Chief Magistrate. The Enterprise: Among all the public men of South Carolina. we know of none who have more of the sterling qualities that go to make up a real character in a vigorous manhood than can be found in Dr. W. H. Timmerman, * former State Treasurer. You may find better orators, better looking men and may be more profound scholar^, but none witn more character if character, is to be measured by the injunction, uDo unto others as you would have others to do unto you."
