I ?B?P?M?? ? The Lexington Dispatch Wednesday. March 28. 1902. First Move on Political Board. Colombia State, 22. From April 3 on through September there will be much politics in South Carolina. State and county officers, a United States senator and \ a full set of congressmen are to be chosen by the people. Thus far this campaign year has been a very quiet one though many have been informally announcing their candidacy for different cffices. It was not until yesterday, however, that the first official move was made on the political checkerboard looking to the campaign of 1902. It came in the shape of a call issued by Chairman Wille JoDes of the State Democratic executive committee for a meeting of that committee to be held here in the cffice of the secretary of state on the evening of April 3. Thi9 meeting is simply for the purpose of issuing the formal call for the State convention to be held on May 21 and the call for the various precinct meetings and county conventions to be held earlier. The comlk mittee will have nothing else to do ' - so far as Known, it will nave notning whatever to do with the matter of I arranging the State campaign this year, that duty falling upon the new committee to be elected by the State convention. It is not unlikely, however, that the precinct clubs and !he county conventions will express themselves on the matter of. reducing the number of campaign gatherings so that the State convention can consider the matter in the light of what the people wish. In several counties articles have been published advocating the reduction of the number of meetings. Secretary Gunter cf the State committee pvnpets to e^et ud a circular WW c O t letter to be sent to the county chairmen shortly giving the dates of the different meetings preliminary to the State convention and full information as to the number of delegates allowed, etc. Bat the call yesterday is the first official political move of the campaign year and now that the ball has been opened the formal announcement of many candidates for various positions may be expected. Already in all parts of the State a great deal of political talk is being indulged in. ' Saves Two From Death. "Our little daughter had an almost fatal attack of whooping cough and bronchitis," writes Mrs. W. K. Haviland. of Armonk. N. Y , "but, when all other remedies failed, we saved her life with Dr. King's New Discovery. Our niece, who had Consumption in an advanced stage, also used this wonderful medicine and today she is perfectly well." Desperate throat and lung diseases yield to Dr. King's New Discovery as to no other medicine on earth. Infallible for Coughs and Colds. oOc and SI.00 bottles guaranteed by J. E. Kaufmann'e. Trial bottles free. A General Increase. The clerk of the State Pension Board has much work before her this year. All the county boards save four have sent in the approved applications for pensions in their respective counties, and the clerk is being kept busy arranging them for the consideration of the State board. The increase in the number of pensioners all along the line is surprisingly large, and can only be accounted for by the increase in the pension appropriation. The State board will soon meet and begin its work. The pension department is exceedingly anxious to have the reports from the missing counties immediately. Spartanburg county, as recently stated, shows a greater increase in the num ber cf pensioners than many of the other counties have altogether. ? ? An Essay on the Editor. A little boy was requested to write an essay, the other day, and uThe Newspaper" was his subject. Here is the result: kiI don't know how newspapers come to be in the world. An Animal West African* Say Has the Soul of a 3Ian. Gorilla hunting is a distinct sensation ?ven for the veteran hunter. This aniaial. which lias become eoni'uscd somekvhat with fable and fiction, is a reali:y and a decidedly unpleasant one to ?ngnge. The west Africans are mortally afraid of it, believing that the brute L-ontains the spirit of a man. They attribute to it all sorts of ferocities, like lie carrying off of a human being, who s permitted to return after being de4;>rivod of toe and linger nails. "Skilled liuntcrs have never observed my of these doing's, but they testify to the brute's strength and ferocity." says A.IIen Sangree in Ainslce's. "According to a French sportsman, a full grown rorilla can bite through a tree six inch-7 *> ?s thick in order to secure the sap and twist a gun barrel with the swollen junehes of muscle thai serve for arms, [lis roar is terrifying and can be heard for a distance of three miles. 44'I shall never forget how the first tme impressed me.' says the Frenchman, 'for I had a bad attack of shakes. The woods had been tilled some time with a barking roar, but I saw nothing until my guide clucked softly and [Netted to a tree alongside which stood ill immense male gorilla. There he remained but twelve yards awav, boldly facing us with his huge chest, muscular arms, fiercely glaring deep gray eyes and a hellish expression, until I moved. " 'At that ho dropped to all fours and came six yards nearer, sitting up to beat his breasts with his huge lists?a defiance?so that it sounded like an immense drum, llis roar was most singular, beginning with a kind of hark and deepening into a bass roll that literally resembled thunder. I shot him through the heart. With a groan something human and yet brutish, he fell on his l'ace and died quickly, like a man. lie measured T> feet t> inches in length, his chest was (52 inches, and his arms spread h feet. I was glad to have the specimen, but somehow after that never cared to kill a gorilla unless he actually menaced me.'" NOTHING WAS LOST. An Omission In n Wedding: Ceremony That Didn't Count. A distinguished officer of the United States navy once told this story on himself: At the time of his marriage lie had been through the civil war and had had many harrowing experiences aboard | ship, through all of which he kept courage and remained as calm as a brave mail should. As the time for the ceremony came on. however, his calmness gradually gave way. At the altar, amid tlu? blaze of brass buttons and gold lace marking the full naval wedding, the officer was all but stampeded and what went on-there seemed very much mixed to him. Fearing the excitement of the moment would temporarily take him off his feet, the officer had learned the marriage ceremony letter perfect, as he thought, and he remembered repeating the words after the minister ill a mechanical sort of way. After the ceremony was over and all was serene again, including the officer's state of mind, the kindly clergyman came up to him and touched him on the shoulder. The bridegroom seemed perturbed for a moment, and then a beaming light came into his face. "Never mini, sir." lie said. "She didn't lose a blessed thing by my failure."?Washington Star.
