First Move on Political Board.

From April 3 on through September
there will be much politics in
South Carolina. State and county
officers, a United States senator and
\ a full set of congressmen are to be
chosen by the people. Thus far this
campaign year has been a very quiet
one though many have been informally
announcing their candidacy for
different cffices.
It was not until yesterday, however,
that the first official move was
made on the political checkerboard
looking to the campaign of 1902. It
came in the shape of a call issued by
Chairman Wille JoDes of the State
Democratic executive committee for
a meeting of that committee to be
held here in the cffice of the secretary
of state on the evening of April
3. Thi9 meeting is simply for the
purpose of issuing the formal call for
the State convention to be held on
May 21 and the call for the various
precinct meetings and county conventions
to be held earlier. The comlk
mittee will have nothing else to do

so far as Known, it will nave notning
whatever to do with the matter of

arranging the State campaign this
year, that duty falling upon the new
committee to be elected by the State
convention.
It is not unlikely, however, that the
precinct clubs and !he county conventions
will express themselves on
the matter of. reducing the number
of campaign gatherings so that the
State convention can consider the
matter in the light of what the people
wish. In several counties articles
have been published advocating the
reduction of the number of meetings.

different meetings preliminary to the
State convention and full information
as to the number of delegates allowed,
etc.
Bat the call yesterday is the first
official political move of the campaign
year and now that the ball has been
opened the formal announcement of
many candidates for various positions
may be expected. Already in all
parts of the State a great deal of political
talk is being indulged in.

A General Increase.
The clerk of the State Pension
Board has much work before her this
year. All the county boards save
four have sent in the approved applications
for pensions in their respective
counties, and the clerk is
being kept busy arranging them for
the consideration of the State board.
The increase in the number of pensioners
all along the line is surprisingly
large, and can only be accounted
for by the increase in the pension
appropriation. The State board will
soon meet and begin its work. The
pension department is exceedingly
anxious to have the reports from the
missing counties immediately. Spartanburg
county, as recently stated,
shows a greater increase in the num
ber cf pensioners than many of the
other counties have altogether.

An Essay on the Editor.
A little boy was requested to write
an essay, the other day, and uThe
Newspaper" was his subject. Here
is the result: kiI don't know how
newspapers come to be in the world.

tried by court marshal on the
charge of causing the death of a soldier
prisoner by gagging him and j
pouring water on his head, has been
! acquitted. .
The two reconcentrado camps in
Bantangas Province are most carefully
maintained. The Fillipinos in
the camps are healthy and contented j
and the street and houses are perfectly
clean. The food supply con- j
. sists of rice and many vegetables. All !
| the people in the camps have been.l
vaccinated and rigid sanitary pre$
cautions are taken to prevent the
spread of diseases. There are G,000
Fillipinos in one of the camps 19,003
I in the other.

Beaufort, March 21?The Coosaw
Phosphate works suspended operations
indefinitely last night by order
of Superintendent D. H. Lopez,
who acted under instructions from

which met in annual session in Charleston
yesterday. Little credence is
given to the rumor that the company |
will soon be bought and operated by ,
the Virginia-Carolina Chemical com- j
pany. One hundred and forty-three i
men, all of whom have families, will j
be thrown out of work by the unex- i
| pected shut down.

Chinese Troops Desert.

Rev. Dr. Munhall closed a series of
meetings in Augusta last week. The
result of the meetings was the addition
of 141 persons to the membership
of the various churches of the
city. The preaching was plain and
simple and quiet.

freight train, while attempting to get

An Omission In n Wedding: Ceremony
That Didn't Count.
A distinguished officer of the United
States navy once told this story on himself:
At the time of his marriage lie had
been through the civil war and had had
many harrowing experiences aboard |
ship, through all of which he kept courage
and remained as calm as a brave
mail should. As the time for the ceremony
came on. however, his calmness
gradually gave way. At the altar, amid
tlu? blaze of brass buttons and gold
lace marking the full naval wedding,
the officer was all but stampeded and
what went on-there seemed very much
mixed to him. Fearing the excitement
of the moment would temporarily take
him off his feet, the officer had learned
the marriage ceremony letter perfect,
as he thought, and he remembered repeating
the words after the minister ill
a mechanical sort of way.
After the ceremony was over and all
was serene again, including the officer's
state of mind, the kindly clergyman
came up to him and touched him
on the shoulder.

came into his face.
"Never mini, sir." lie said. "She
