T- LexmsrtoD Dispatch I % Wednesday. January 1,1902. Battles of the Civil War. ? i Genenral F. Y. Green says in j Scribner's Magazine: The campaigns aDd battles of the civil war were on a scale of surpassing magnitude. There were more than j fa score of single battles, sometimes extending over several days, in each j of which the losses in killed and wounded on the Federal side were greater than the aggregation of all j losses in all other wars combined, i How paltry seem the 5,000 killed and 1 wounded in the war of 1812, or the j war in Mexico, or the war with Spain, compared with the 14,000 at Shilob, 15,000 at the Chickahominy, 13.000 at Antietam, the same at Fredericksburg, 10,000 at Chancellorsville, 23,000 at Gettysburg, 16,000 at Chickamauga, 37,000 in the Wilderness and 26,000 at Soottsylvania. The grand aggregate of destruction fairly staggers the imagination accustomed as we have been for more than a generation to the figure?: 9.3,000 killed by ballets, 186.000 killed by disease, 25,000 dead from other causes?a grand total of 301,000, about one in nine of every man who wore the uniform. In no other war in all time has such respect been paid to the dead Immediately after its close the Secretary of War was directed by Congress "to secure suitable burial places, j and to have these grounds enclosed, i so that the resting places of the boo- I - - "* ' 1 L J t i ored aeaa may 09 jsepu samcu uhever.*' Ia seventy nine separate and distinct national cemeteries the bodies of nearly 300,000 soldiers who died during the civil war are interred, and the decoration of their graves with flowers on a fixed day has become a national custom. Some of the cemeteries contain each a silent army of over 10.000 soldiers, in serried ranks marked by the white headstones, on nearly half of which is inscribed "nnknown." The world may be searched in vain for anything similar or kindred; there is no other such impressive sight. On fame eternal campaign ground, Tbeir silent tents are spread; * r>/? nlnrv crnar^s vith solemn road. 6 J ? . Tt bivouac of the dead. Remarkable Cure 0; Cronp,?A Little Boy's Life Saved. v I have a few words to say regarding Chamberlain's Congh Remedy. It Baved my little boy's life and I feel that I cannot praise it enough.' I bought a bottle of it from A. E. Steele, of Goodwin, S. D., and when I got home with it the poor baby could hardly breathe. I gave the medicine as directed every ten minutes until he "threw up'' and then I thought sure he was going to choke dAftth. We had to Dull the phlegm out cf his mouth in great long strings. I am positive that if I had Dot got that bottle of cough ? medicine, my boy would not be on earth today.?Joel Dement, Iuwood, Iowa. For sale by J. E. Eaufmann. On the Warpath. Sores and Ulcers never become chronic unless the blood is in poor condition ? is sluggish, weak and unable to throw ofl the poisons that accumulate in it. The system must be relieved of the unhealthy matter through the sore, and great danger to life would follow should it heal before the blood has been made pure and healthy and all impurities eliminated from the system. S.S.S. begins the cure by first cleansing and invigorating the blood, building up the general health and removing from the system A CONSTANT DRAM a l i morbid, ? -7 effete matter. THE SYSTEM* [ When this has been accomplished the discharge gradually ceases, and the sore or ulce*- heals. It is the tendency of these old I indolent sores to grow worse and worse, | and eventually to destroy the bones. Local 1 appbcations, while soothing and to some extent alleviate pain, cannot reacn uie seal of the trouble. S. S. S. does, and no matter how apparently hopeless your condition, even though your constitution has broken down, it will bring relief when nothing else can. It supplies the rich, pure blood necessary to heal the sore and nourish the debilitated, diseased body. Mr. J. B. Talbert, Lock Box :45,Winona, Miss., says: " Six years ago my leg from the knee to the foot was one solid sore. Several physician! treated me and I made two trips to Hot Springs, but found no relief. I was induced to try S. S. S, and it made a complete cure. I have been a per fectly well man ever since." S(JC fST^ stable blood purifier poisonous minerals to qggiy' rujn digestion and add to, rather than relieve your sufferings. If your flesh does not heal readily when scratched, bruised or cut, your blood is in bad condition, and any ordinary sore is apt to become chronic.
