The Lexington Dispatch. j Wednesday. November 27,1901. Tipper Black Creek Items. To the Editor of the Dispatch: November has brought some cool j and frosty mornings, which makes one feel the need of fires. The health of this community is extremely good. The farmers of this section are busy sowing small grain. More is being sowed this fall than was here tofore. Potato digging is over and the yield was very good. Miss CoznmiDgs Smith has just returned home from a visit to her sister, Mrs. T. M. Kannady, of Brookland. We are glad to see you come home again. Mr. J. J. Crout recently returned from a business trip to Augusta, Ga. He speaks highly of that place. Mr. P. J. Miller, of Graniteville, epent a few days under the parental roof last week. Mr. N. A. Lewis has lately moved in our midst. He is staying with bis brother, Mr. d. A. Jjewis. Mr. Olen Rikard has resigned his position with Mr. J. L. Crout and has accepted one with Col. J. Frye. Olen is a bright young man. Klondike is still carrying the mail for Uncle Sam every day with that same smile on. He is a highly esteemed gentleman. The Black Creek string band entered the home of Uncle Charles A. Rikard last Saturday eight at S;3U j a. id., and commenced playing some j excellent music, which they continued for some hours. Everybody enjoyed it who was there. Well, Mr. Editor, if I am not drummed out of this section you may again hear from Lillie. $100 Reward $100. A Fireman's Close Call. "I stuck to my engine, although every joint ached and every nerve was racked with pain," writes C. W. Bellamy, a locomotive fireman, of BurlingtoD, Iowa, "I was weak and pale, without any appetite and all run down. As I was about to give up, I got a bottle of Electric Bitters and, after taking it, I felt as well as I ever did in my life." New York, Nov. 20 ?According to the Journal the best men in the United States secret service and the cleverest inspector of the post office department are at present working in an attempt to discover the details of a new green goods scheme which was worked until a week ago from Manhattan, and which is at present being operated from Jersey City and from Chicago. The victims are second, third and fourth class postmasters, who do not dare complain to the authorities. It is said since the first of July over a thousand postmasters were swindled oat of sums ranging from $2-50 to SI,600. Postmasters were invited and urged to purchase, instead of money, postage stamps from "undestroyed plates of the government" plates and stamps which of course, are Dot in existence. Such postmasters are lured cn by samples sent them, these samples beiDg genuine stampe. When the victim reaches the city all the old-fashioned games of substitution are practiced on them.
