The Lexington Dispatch G. M. HARMAN. Editor and Publisher. LEXINGTON. 8. C.. WFDNESDAY, MARCH 27. 1?)1 * THE GOOSE CORNER FROLIC. 1 c BY CLARA AUGUSTA. E Christmus time this year, tbey had ? a Hanpp an' sleieh ride, over to Goose \ w o Corner, to Joneb' tavern, an' a supper afterward. It's quite a spell sense I've tripped the "light fantastic" to any extent, for that er rbumatiz of mine has pritty well knocked all the gimp out of me. But this time, lots of middle aged folks was a goin', an1 Ezry he was besot to go, too. "Land o' Goshen," says I, "a pritty figger you'd cut over there, with them corns of yourn stickin' out through them holes in yer boots," says I, for Ezry's got corns so bad that he's had to cut holes into bis boots an' shoes Bo's they can bulge through,' an' if you happen to come within an acre of ground of hittin' of them, he's mad enough an' decomposed enough to raise the ruff. I "A pritty figger," says I, "you'd be with them holes into yer boots, an' - ~ - a s t_ _ j like as cot joua De toos wuo a ui?- 1 lary fit, an' shake so you'd make the winders rattle?" 1 "I don't care a cent," says Ezry. "whether I'm took with her or not, j I'm a goin' over to that are dance if ] my bair holds ol ! Blame it all, Betsy, , you'd never let a feller go anywheres ] if you could help it! An' as for the j holes into my boots, Til wear black stockin's, an' in the evenin' who's a goin' to notice my feel? Especially i if I jest tonch up the holes with a i little varnish, so's to make the stock- i in's look like lutbei?" Wall," says I, "all I've got to say is if anybody should step onto any of ! them corns of youm, you'll have to grin and bear it, an' not dance round I an' 6wear a9 you do to home when ] anything of that kind happens." "Them corns is my owd," says he, i an' I've a right to do as I please with 'em. AV if a pritty girl should hap pen to step onto 'em, it would be 1 very different to what it is to have an i old woman that weighs a hundred an' seventy-five a treadin' onto 'em, ' says : he, an' he went out of the door lively, for he knows well enough that if i there's anything that I'm specially techy about it's my heft. I hate to be twitted about it. Who's 1 to blame for my bein'so heft}* That's i what I'd like to know? Nobody wants to weigh- two hundred, that I know i of, but how in nater is it to be pre- 1 vented if it gits a comin"? I've took ' aunty fat an' aunty lean, an' Nobesty 1 pills, an' Killcorpulency bitters by the 1 quart, but they didn't do me any ' more gccd than so much dish water. < I've let alone eating taters an' equa6n- J es an' bile dinner?, and sugar things i ginearally, an' I've lived on lean meat 1 an' wheat bran, but I got fatter than ( ever, an' my stomach felt as mean as ^ the insides of an empty merlasses < hoggsett. I An as for lacin' myself up to look 1 smaller, I ain't a goin' to do no sech 1 of a tbiDg. I'm a goin' to have my i bigness in this world, if there's room t enough, jest as long as I stay here. i But Ezry hain't no call to twit me with that bigness. I Wall, when I found how sot he was \ on a goin' to the dancin' party, I i thought I wouldn't say nothin' more * agin it. So I bushed up his Sunday g clothes, and made him a necktie out 8 of one of Ann Mariah's old silk f handkerchers, an' I bought him a 1 stand up collar at the store, an' I * bunted up an old pair of pumps for c myself to wear, but lands sake! I 8 could'n git my feet nowhere anighst 8 them. Strange, how anybody's feet 11 do grow and swell out arter they're old?no not exactly old? but kinder a middle aged. * Ezry he fixed bis boots an7 stock- " in's, eo's he thought nobody would ^ notice 'em, an' he got him a new col- ' lar button at a 5 cents counter of Mr. 0 Brown's store, an' he felt as kinky an' 5 pert as a young Plymouth Rock 1 rooster. "By Jinks, Betsy," says he, "I feel 1 as if I could swing a leg with the a best of 'em " 6 "Ob, pa," says Ann Mariab, "don't & be so awfully vulgar. Say limb, iD- c stead of?of the other thing you said." "I said leg, an' I mean it," says ? Ezry, "an' I hain't felt so young for 8 twenty year as I do now, jest a- * L Remarkable Cures of Rheumatism. t From the Vindicator, Ratherfordton, N. Ann Mariah she was dreadful disgusted with the idee of her pa an' [ goin' to that dance. I expected she would be. It don't take much to disgust her. uAt your age, ma!" says she, "an' with your rheumatic tendencies, an' pa with his excrescences on his pedal extremities?an' it is a wellknown face," says she, "that such dissipations abridge one's chances for longevity, besides givin' latitude for?" "Darn the latitude an' longitude, toe," says Ezry. "I'm a-goin' to that are dance, sn' my pedal extremi ties is a goin' with me! So you may all settle yer minds down to it." "Wall, when the night arriv' we all . ent over to tb? dance. Fitz-Smith be come up from the city with a white ve6t on, an' a collar that hid half of bis ears, an'made him look like a pumpkin in a wheelbarrer when the side boards is in. He was scented up so that I smelt him when be turned in at the gate, an' so did Towzer, for he jumped up an' snorted, an' barked like he does when he Bmells a woodchuck. Almost everybody for ten miles round was at the dance. Mandy Perkins she was there, but land t sake, she cau't dance no more'n a cow, an' as fer that Sparkins tribe? wall, you would have died a laffin' to aee how hard tbev'd tried to rig up an' look smart. I danced a little, but it sorter stiffened up my jints, so's there warn't much fun in it. I asked Setb Sawin to be my pardner, seein' as he's so bashful, an' we'd got well started when Belindy Ladd danced up, an' put out her hand for Seth to swing her. An' my land! the minnit she teched him, he dropped cne as if I'd been a hot pertater, an' struck a bee line right through the lancers, an' trod onto the tail of Mrs. Col. Fisher's gownd, which stretched out a yard or two behind rer, an' she went right along skippin' an hoppin', but her dress stayed >ehind. That is to say, the heft of t did, an' when she kinder brought I WaVI?V\/3 n rv* ip( ttJJU 1UU&CU ucutuu UU) a uiauuci voman yoa never see. But Seth he made a dive for the learest winder, an' out of it he went, vithout ever stoppin' to see where )e was likely fer to land. The ?inder was full ten foot from the jround, an' we all stopped dancin' m' took some lanterns, an' went out or to pick up his melancholy reuaindere, but be warn t nowheres to >e found. It was the greatest won [er in the world that he didn't break ome of his bones, so everybody aid. Strange how afeard that man 9 of a woman. Ezry he got tuckered out pritty con, an' had to sit down, an' after a ittle spell I missed him, an' didn't mow but his malary had got holt on lim, an' I hunted round for him. It eas not long afore I found him settin' iut in the back entry, along with >opby Barker, the red headed gir! hat cooks over to Uol. Fisbei's. "You'll git cold settin' out here in he draft," says I. "come in and take i quinine pill afore you have a hake," says I, air I grabbed him by he arm an' danced him back into the lancin' room. "Betsy," says he, "that are Barker ;irl she drove Fisher's colt over here, in' she's skaired nigh about to death o think of drivin' it home in the light so. An' she asked me if I vouldn'i be so good a3 to go along vith her an' drive. She's that skairt hat she can't dance nornothin' else." "Fisher's colt," says I, "why good and, that ciitter's twelve years old lext month. He'd jest the age of kliss Sparkinses' Thomas Diddymus. Chey were born the same day. I renember as well as can be of sayin' hat Thomas Diddymu9 Sparkins an' Fisher's red colt came as near bein' ,wins as they could an' miss it.'' ' Wall, the hoss has been cuttin' ip some lately, an' she's afeard of lim." says Ez^y, "an' I told her I'd jo, Betsy. Y^u an' Ado Miriah, an' j ? nl ^ T^aK I jer youug Win VJBU mauago Viu A/uu >et well enough, can't you?" I knowd wtll enough that Ezra had igged up that story jest to git a :hance of riding home with that red leaded girl, for he's a silly old fool wb<>re gitl-* is concarned, an* j -et as tickled to flirt if he waru't more'u twenty years old I'm ashamed of him, but luud s>tkp, every mm h is some fault or other, an' all you can do is to put up with it a-< well as you can. But I determined that he shouldu't git ahead of me, so when I see Lim i - ' -? a _t,? o-u amaain sigus iu o iu uu things, while he went afer the boss, I slipped upstairs, an' grabbed her bunnit and shawl, put "em on, an" went out to the barn where Ezry had got the colt tackled into the sleigh. An' I knowd wdl erough that while she was a huntiu" for her dry goods, Ezry an' I should be started for Col. Fisher's. An' I was tickled eanaraost to death to think how cheap that are girl would feci when she couldn't find her thing. I got light into the sleigh, an Ezry fullered. The colt was a little frisky, but a9 soon as Ezry got him in ban3, be begun lor to "spoon onto me. "This is something like," says he, in his most sugary tone of voice. "By Jmks, Sophy, it's pritty hard to be tied up to one woman all the time, an' a fat old woman at that. Now, if it was a cute little roly-poly girl like you, Sophy, it wouldn't be bid at all ?whoe! thert! Hi, you sarpint?it wouldn't be half so bad, Sophy.'" I giggled a little, for Sopha is an awful giggler, an' Ezry he sot up a little nigher to me, so nigh that I could smell the ooions in the soup we'd had for dinner, an' he got his arm round my waist, an' give it a teenty fquefze. "I can reach round you, Sophy," says he, "real easy, but Betsy, now I have to try twice to reach round her oncet, Whoa, there! Drat that host!" an' he drawed his arm away, an' sot himself to carm down the colt, which seemed to be a try in' it's best to tip us into the gutter. "An' I swaD, Sophy," says he, "if I was a free mm, an' you'd let me, I'd be a shiuin' up to you so quick that you couldn't 6ay Jack Rjbber son?Whoa, there! Gee whizz! ain't that critter's a thra3he;? S.>phy I should like to " Jest then that are boss made a jump sideways, an' over weDt the sleigh, an' wheD I cum to myself, I was sittin' on the top of a snow drift, an' Ezry he was a crawlin' out from under a pile of buffibes, an'swearin' fit to split the univarse. An' the colt an' the 6leigh looked like a black line about a mile off, streakin' it for Fisher's barn. "Wall, Ezry," says I, "I guess the best thiDg for u? old folks to do is to go home." "Land of dcliveranc?!" says Ezry, startin' back as if he'd been hit with something, "why, Betsy, how on airth come you hen? You see I didn't want to come with Sophy, but she was 60 skairt " "There, therp, says I, "you needn't put yourself out to make no excuses. I know jest how it was, an' so I come along in that red headed critter's place. I'm ashamed of you, Ezry, for there is no fool like an old fool, but if you'll keep mum I will." "Betsy," says he, "I don't love no other wcman but you." Au' the des tasteful old critter actilly kissed me. Wall, we all of us have our failin's Steps the Couch and Works eff the ~ Cold.
