[ lie Lexington Dispatch burned April 25th; rebuilt July 19, 1894. G. M. BARllAX. Editor and Publisher. LEXINGTON. S. C.. W> ONES"'AS. JUNE 6. ISOO. A Debt of Gratitude. A very pleasant surprise was given the inmates of the Lutheran parsonage by the many friends of Pastor Graichen and his family on Friday evening, May 25th. In the very generous donation made of articles too numerous to name, all the different Chriotian de ' T nominations 01 .Liexiuguou nnc reaented, as well as friends not members of cur local churches. While the gifts are appreciated for their intrinsic worth they are still more valued aod prized for the beautiful f-piiit of love and lojal friendship which they express aDd speak with many el quent tongues to the hearts of the pastor and his family. The pleasing hope is cherished by _ the recipient that he may be able to show his gratitude in a more devoted and efficient service to his friends and the community. The pastor of St. Stephen's church and his family haviDg received so many, tokens of respect and love from the kind and noble people of Lexmgton, feel themselves more tbaD ever under grateful and perpetual obligation. It was also a great pleasure and satisfaction to us to have present wito us in our home on Friday night, May 25th, so many of our dear friends, and it especially gave us happiness to hear them say that the f>v*rnn(y was so eniovable in our I ? - ? D m v home. Bat not to ourselves is the credit du9 of the full cup of happi. ness tbey pressed to their lips and drank of so fieely. It was however a matter of cot a little regret that we could not do more to make the evening edifyiDg and erjryable to our guests and friends that had done so much to make our hearts joyful aod with a lavish hand had scattered so many fragrant and beautiful flowers in our pathway of life. As love is so royal and exalted that she will not have compensation, and we are unable to reach her by our poor return of words and avowals of friendship; be pleased to permit us to ask you to remember the words of the Lord Je6us, how he said: "It is more blessed to give than to receive.1' J. Selma Items. i To the Editor of the Dispatch: Mrs. Rachel Amich, who bad beeD a patient and helpless sufferer for seven long yea re, peacefully passed j away last. Thursday and was laid to J rest in the cemetery of Mt. O'ivet 1 church, on Friday afternoon. Her pastor Rev. S. C. Balientine preached t a very excellent and appropriate sermon to a large congregation of sorrowing relatives and flionds. She leaves a husband, who bus been ai most totally blind for several years, live sons and a large nniuter of grandchildren to tnourn her departure. The weather during the month of May was generally unfavorable for farm and garden, being very little rain and a great deal of cool windy weather. Poor stands of cotton and very little growth, is the general complaint Much of the corn ground ~4;n : ? i ~ u_ i T" .. Mr. John Kesier, one of our most progressive and successful farmer?, has purchased a reaper. We a/e sorry that no oDe has thought it would pay to put up a roller mill in the Fork. Much of the wheat crop will be ground at [ mills outside of the county. It is very probable tbat the fourth j of July will again be celebrated at Selma with a huge picnic. Program | will be published later. S. T t . A Card. To the Editor of the Dispatch: Perait me, through ycurcolumns,to return my thanks to my many I friends for their endorsement of my work as County Supervisor in renominating me for a second term. I am grateful for their endorsement and appreciate their interest in my behalf; I am compelled, however, for satisfactory reasons to . - ii ? decline to enter toe race ior supervisor, haviDg already pledged myself to run for County Commissioner. For this office I am in the race to win and will assure my friends that if elected the county will have my most faithful services. Respectfully, G H. Kood. May 6. 1900. Irmo Itemizings. To the Editor of the Dispatch: This morning we witnessed the grandest phenomenon of our lives? a total eclipse of the sun. We did not have a telescope, but we viewed it through smoked glasses, &od brought our photographic lenses to bear upon it that we may leave to our children and grand children a photograph of what we will not have an opportunity of witnessing again. The crowd that went on the excursion to Little Mountain numbered four hundred or more. Dr. Julius Dreher, of Roanoke Cjllege, Prof. Ernest Dreher, Supt. of Graded Schools, Columbia, S C, and Messrs.
