The Lexington Dispatch Burned April 25th; rebuilt Julv 19. 1894. G. M. HARMAN. Editor and Publisher. LEXINGTON, S. C., WJ5IN2SDAY, AUGUST 9. 1899. She Was Too Mad to Speak. The Washington woman came across some excellent tea in England i ?tea the like cf which she had never known before. She knew there was noDe of it to be bad in America, so she bought pounds and pounds of it to bring home with her. She didn't mean to pay duty on it, for she felt that no really patriotic American can consistently pay a tea fur offer roKof rmv nnppRtnrR did in Boston harbor, so she made herself a petticoat, and into the lining thereof she quilted the tea. When the steamer drew into port, she put on the garment. To wear it was martyrdom. It seemed to weigh a ton. She could scarcely walk in it, and the hang of her new goiDg ashore gown was utterly ruined by it, but the custom house officials let her pass without suspicion. She went directly to the railway station and started for Washington. The journey will live long in her memory for its discomfort. Her husband met her at the station. He marked ^her pale, worn look. As they stepped into the carriage she told him the story. "I wasn't going to let them get ahead of me," sh6 said proudly. ''Wasn't it a lovely idea?" Her husband fell Lack in the car riage and roared. "Lovely !" he said. "Lovely! I should say it. Why, my dear, there isn't aDy duty on tea." And let me remark in passing that the child's sob in the silence isn't by any means the ODly thiDg that curseth deeper than the strong man in his wrath. ? That Thrchhing Headache. Would quickly leave you, if you used Dr. King's New Life Pills. Thousands of sufferers have proved their matchless merit for Sick and Nervous Headaches. They make pure blood and stroDg nerves and build up your health. Easy to take". Try them. Only 25 cents. Money back if not cured. Sold by J. E. Kaufmann, Druggist. The Laugh Wasn't on the Boy. It is said that Professor Bla'ckie often told this anecdote "on himself." This genial old professor used to form a very picturesque feature in the Edinburgh streets. He was a wiry old patriarch, with handsome features and hair falling in ringlets about his shoulders. No one who had seen him. One day he was accosted by a very dirty little bootblack whith his "Shine your boots, sir?" The professor was impressed by the filthiness of the boy's face. "I don't want a shine, my lad," said he. '-But if you'll go and wash yonr face I'll give you sixpence."' "A' richt, sir,'" was the lad's reply. Then he went over to a neighboring fountain and made his ablutions. Returning, he held out his hand for the money. "Well, my lad,'" said the professor, "you have earned your sixpence. Here it is." "I dinna want it,"' returned the i boy, with a lordly air. "Ye can keep it and get yer hair cut." i Ths Irony Fate. Columbia Evening Record. A good story is being circulated at the expense of a Laurens merchant who would not patronize a home enteoprise. The Lauren3 Canning factory, one of the most successful < concerns in the State, ships its goods < to all parts of the country, but the merchant in question persistently , refused to place his order with it because it was a local concern, whose 1 goods were not, as he thought, of the quality he desired to handle. Recently, the story goes, he placed , an order with a New York house, giving them instructions to send the best canned goods in the house. "When the goods came the merchant, to his surprise, learned that they were goods from the Laurens factory, put up within half a mile of his store. Aside from the freight, j 1 he paid considerably more for the goods than they would have cost him at Laurens. Moral?Patron- < home industry. To the Public.
