We were pleased to receive a hearty shake from him. Justus Wingard will give a barbecue at Midway school house three miles north of this place, on August 5th. This is the place where the young people congregate to have a Sd? time and the older ones to talk of matters of interest to themselves. Let everybody attend this cue. Last Monday was salesday in July, but no one would have thought so by the number of visitors in town, with the exception of those having business with 'he County Commissioners, but few of our country cousins came to see us. There were no public sales either by tho county officials or private individuals. The Columbia papers tells the 3tory of a Lexington lady being severely injured by being thrown from a wagon in that city one day last week. While passing the Gervais street railroad crossing the mules became freightened at a passing train and ran awsy with the above result. No names were mentioned. The 4th of Julv ball in BallentiQe's Hall, last night was well attended by the young people of the town and surrounding country. All report having had a ''break down,'' time and the dancing was kept up until the wee small hours. During the eveDiDg refreshments were served by the Parlor Restaurant. Music was furnished by the Piuckney String Band. Jim Attaway, the young wrfcite man who was charged with rape and assault and battery with intent to kill, was given a preliminary hearing before Magistrate Rammer, last Friday. The testimony developed that no rape had been committed nor reither was there an assault and battery. He was held however, for carrying concealed weapons. The case was settled yesterday by an agreement that he would leave i the State and never return. Mr. D. M. Sox, while going for his mail on July 1st, killed a large rattle- j snake on Mr. G. W. Reeder's place, j It was five feet seven inches long, J and having twelve rattles and a batton, miking it thirteen years o'd ac- ; cordrng to ''snakeoiogists.'" His j snakeship had been seen several { times last summer about the same j placo where it was killed, but gener- I ally by boys who were afraid totuckle j the venomous monster. Several camps have j been established along the route and the big steam shovel has been put to good use iu digging out the deepest cut along the ii.ie of road. The crowd was large, orderly and well behaved and the day was pleasantly spent in social conversation and listening to the candidates who are contending for the senatorial toga. Candidates Orosson, Brooker and Jlarsey, were present and entertained and interested the voters in discussing the problems of State government and I telling what laws were needed to make lis a happy and prosperous people. At this barbecue the senatorial campaign was practically opened although D.\ B ooker spoke at Fryes barbecue, near Lowiedale in tho morning. Board in Session. \ The Board cf County Commissioners was in session Monday and it being pay day for county officials and Magistrates, a considerable sum of money was put in circulation, with this exception only routine business was transacted. Complaints were received from numerous citizens living in the vicinity of the Savannah extension of the Southern Railway, which is now under construction, about tbe contractors obstructing the public highways and neighborhood roads by felliDg trees aDd placing material and debris thereon. Supervisor Koon, with his usual promptness in looking after the welfare of the county and the convenience and comfort of her citizens, Las gone down there to make a thorough investigation of affairs and will take the necessary steps to protect the rights of the people. ?. ? President McKinley has or will issue his proclamation, it is said, calling for 100,000 volunteers to go tp the Philippines to fight the insurgents. Piatt, Hock & Shull, Columbia, have issued a proclamation calling for an additional 100,000 customers to take advantage of the low prices at which they are offering a large an excellent stock of plantation and family groceries and enable tbem to successfully fight the trusts. They have been very successful so far in their business and the secret of tbeir success is the best service and the most goods for the least money.
