Consumers of family groceries should keep this change of stands in mind, that is if they want to purchase the best goods at the lowest prices. Mr. Bailey intends to deal fairly by all by giving honest weights and honest goods. We regret to learn of the death of Prof. Helmes, of the Columbia Female College, which occurred at his home at Hyatt's Park in Columbia, nn Wpdnesdav. He was at one time Principal of Eatesburg Institute and by bis gentlemanly conduct and Christian walk wen the confidence and esteem of tbe community. He was a seholaily genlleraau of high attainments and his death is a blow to his profession. Quite an expensive accident occurred on the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad, near Irmo, in this count? last week, to a mix train j in which several box cars wc-re ! wrecked. Fortunately no lives were i lost nor no one was seriously injured, i The cause of the accident is not I k lown. Travel was interrupted for several days. The wreckage has been cleared away and the trains now go through on time. The Bee Hive cf Bargains. "As busy as bees", is an expression we all have often heard in reference to the industry of a particular person. We have never seen this saying more str'kingly illustrated than at a recent visit to the Globe Dry Goods establishment in Columbia. While the clerks were kept busy waiting on the great throng of customers who crowded* the store, every one of them performed their respective duties with clock woik I 1 1:1? roilT preciM'jii.?tJu liixii ntit uiiiau Do'* diers, the wants of the customers were supplied without noise aud confusion. Mr. Monckton, the popular, pleasant and polite manager, is a hustler and allows no grass to grow under his feet in the search of rare bargains and unprecedented and unapproachable values which be is every day offering to the purchasing public and this is one of the reasons why his store is always crowded during the business hours with aDxious, eager huuters after bargains in the dry goods, notions and in fact every conceivable thing found in a first class department store. Mr. Monckton never allows a customer to leave bis establishment dissatisfied with purchases whcS he knows it because he buys his goods at a small margiD, i aud sells them at a still smaller one, hence this is always a popular resort for those who want the most goods [ for the least money and they invariably get what they want. The manager of the Globe Dry Goods Company will offer extraordinary inducements to the people of Lexington to make their purchases at his store and he will do his utmost to make the visit of a Lexingtonian, both pleasant and profitable. A cordial invitation is extended to all * aud a warm and hearty reception awaits all who call. The misrepresentation of goods just to sell them is never allowed in this establishment ?:id the purchaser may rest easy that she has received more than the full value of her money, whether her purchase be a paper of pins, or the most costly dress pattern of the finest and most delicate weave. Remember, that no matter at what figures other establishments may offer goods, he is prepared to duplicate the same class of goods and wiil not be undersold by any one. Country merchants are informed that they can purchase job lots of all kinds of dry goods, notions, cloth/tliaan o f 4 Via lli^ UUU UabO TCI J CiiCUMi# VUO VliV/MV and that they will be so well pleased with their bargains and treatment that they will never go elsewhere to purchase their stock. "The proof of the pudding is chewing the bag," and if you want to feel how delightful it is to experience the pleasure of having obtained bargains, just do your trading at the Globe and you will have that feeling. .. Firs at Hilton, The store of Dr. J. W. Sandal at Hilton was totally destroyed by fire on the night of the 4th inst. The Doctor was in Columbia at the tim9 of the burning and the origin of the fire is shrouded in mystery. Mr. It B. Killer, who has a store next door to the burn?d building, was the first to discover the fire and when he first saw if, the fire was wholly inside and the flames had just burned through the roof. By hard work his store was saved. Owing to the wet condition of the adjacent buildings, they were saved from destruction. The rains of the preceding days was indeed a fortunate rain for the town of Hilton, otherwise the probability is that it would have been burned out of existenco. As it wa3 only the stock and store of Dr. Sandal were destroyed entailing a loss of about $1,000. - .in ? . ? Death of Mr. John T. Gable. As we go to pre83 we are pained to learn of the death of Mr. John T. Gable, who resides near Midway, which occurred at his home last night about 10 o'clock. He had been sufferirg for some weeks with typhoid fever, but this disease was conquered when he was attacked by some hereditary trouble which culminated in his death. His funeral services will take place tomorrow at 10 o'cloek, at bis late home, and the enterment will be at the family burying ground near the residence of bis father, Mr. D. T. Gable. Mr. G ;ble was a young man of industrious and sober habits, and was greatly beloved by the community in which he resided. The promise of a long, useful and honorable life has been cut short ai d a specimen of glorious young manhood has been prostrated by the hands of death. Our warmest sympathies are extended to the household of mourning. For years he suffered untold agony from consumption, accompanied by hemorrhages; and was absolutely cured by Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds. The appearance of the blind tiger in our midst can be seen nearly every Sunday and whisky's work is witnessed every day. The effect of whisky has become to be a nuisance as well as disgrace to our community. We venture the assertion that no other town in the State permits such disorderly conduct as is frequently witnessed on our streets, especially on Saturday evenings. We are absolutely without police protection, and our present town council is appearantly supremely indifferent about enforcing the ordinances of the town, except it be levy a special tax, the receipting for street dues and the receiving of the town's share of the dispensary profits, which, according to the County Treasurer's annual report for the fiscal year ending December 31st, 1397, was ?251 56, which would Dearly pay the salary of a good and efficient policeman. It is time for the peace and law aoidiDg citizens who respect law and love order to call a halt even if they have j to take charge of the town govern j ment. ! * ? C:s9s in the Supreme Court.
