- I5E*^k? The Lexington Dispatch Burned April 25tb; rebuilt Julv 19. 1894. G. M. HARMAN, Editor and Publisher LEXINGTON, S. C., " I WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 31. 1898. The State Election. Probably two-tbirds of the votes in the State Democratic primary held last Tuesday is in. It is estimated that the total .vote will Dot be much over 60,000. Of this 43,331 has been accounted for, which is distributed among the candidates for Governor as follows: Eilerbe, 16,109; Archer, 712; Featherstoue, 10,623; Schumpert, 4,948: TillmaD, 5,105;. Watson, 4,594; Whitman, 240. It now seems beyond a question that Governor Eilerbe, standing for the Dispensary system, aDd Featherstone, standing for drug store bar rooms at every cross road and plenty of blind tigers in the country, will have to make the race over. In the Third District Latimer is renominated. Strait is undoubtedly defeated and Barber of Chester, and FiDley of York, will make the race again. Ti I? ?: ? ^ ?"? koJnrfio-^ Wrtrtfvn It 19 iijp tliiU tu^ KTG-V n vvm aw* ?vu and EUerbe in the Sixth District. KT- ' Stokes is renominated by an overwhelming majority in the Seventh District. . Floyd and Blythe will come before the people again for Adjutant General. McMahon and Mayfield will seek the votes of the people again for Superintendent of Education. Cooper and Tompkins will oppose each other for Secretary of State. Derham has probably defeated Epton for Comptroller General; and Bellinger will probably be elected Attorney General over Mower. It is not certain which two will have to run the race over for Railroad Commissioner. Campaign day last Friday was one of tbe best and most quiet one held in this county in years, so far a* the people of this county were concerned. Our people were on their good behavior and while they cheered the different speakers whenever they made a good point, they " wero not obstreperous nor inclined to be at all boistrous. Each speaker was given a fair showing and respectful bearing. There was quite a large crowd in attendance, some of the ^candidates saying that pei haps Saluda excepted, it was tbe largest gathering of people they had so far faced during the campaign. The interest was centered in the race for Governor and each of the candidates for this office received their full measure of applause. From a careful observation it is our candid opinion that Governor Ellerbe captivated the audience and won many votes which were wavering in tbe balances, by his straight forward and manly defense of himself and his administration. It was decidedly and emphatically an Eiferbe meeting, and while saying this we do not wish to be understood as implying that the other six candidates for this office had no friends to whoop up their end of the contest. What we mean tc say is that Governor Ellerbe's supporters outnumbered those of the other candidates and it is safe to predict that this county will give him a handsome majority. The ooly incident to mar the meeting was the disgraceful and ungentlemanly wraDgle of some of the candidates for railroad commissioner. These men seemed to forget that they were in the presence of a ref fined and intelligent people who, when they voted, wanted to know that they were voting for competent men and not men whose only recommendation seemed to be their ad aptness in the use of dirty and obscene language and vile charges. We trust that in the next campaign such fellows will be ruled out of the race if they cannot be made to behave themselves. According to a wealthy filipino now in London, the filippinos in Europe are all well-to-do people. Hitherto they have held aloof from the insurgents, but they now realize that their interests demand action and they are about to form a commif f f a nr\nn nocrr\I loiinno rt*i f). uixuvvv vvy u ut^utiatiuuo vittu iuc junta here. They are all in favor of having the archipelago retained by <r* the United States. So strong is their conviction of the desirability of thir course that they bad conternplated approaching the Btitish foreign office to invite Great Britain to intervene, and in aDy even to prevent the islands being returned to the control of Spain. They decided however, to await American action. ~~ Tha County Lecture Beard Will meet at Summerville, Lexington county, S. C, September 17, 1898.
