Completing a KailrcadThe material train on the Midland Railroad is between Seivern and Batesburg, with a gang of hands, filling in low places, overhauling and repairing the road bed. A considerable force of hands is filling in with dirt the trestle across W. J. Barr's mill pond and filling in low places near by. The iron has been laid to Mr. Westmoreiands and the road bed completed up to the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad near Batesburg. Another gang of hands is at Duncan creek, near the residence of Mr. H. W. HaltiwaDger, building a trestle. We understand that it is the object of the receiver to put this road in tip-top condition and as soon as the necessary arrangements can be t made, ties and iron will be laid to Batesburg. He gave notice to all parties interested in tie contiacts to meet him at Seivern to consider matters of business. We did not learn the result of the conference. Roller Flour Mill. As a result of the large acreage planted in wheat in this couuty this year there is a demand for first class roller flouring mills, conveniently located to the wheat fields, to meet this demand Mr. Jasper Long, who has been engaged in the lumber business at Barr's Landing, has decided to close this business out and devote his time and attention to the establishment of a roller flour mill at that place as far as we are informed, when he completes it, it will be the first mill of this kind in the county and he should be encouraged for Lis enterprise and progress by a liberal patronage both from the producer and the consumer. There is plenty of room for the establishment of more such mills and we hope to soon be able to chronicle the establishment of others in different sections of the county. During the past two years, Mrs. J W. Alexander, wife of the editor of the "Waynesboro, (Miss.) Times, has, in a great many instances, relieved her baby when in the first stages of croup, by giving it Chambei Iain's Cough Remedy. She looks upon this remedy as a household necessity and believes that no better medicine has ever been put in bottles. Theie are maDy thousands of mothers in this broad land, who are of the same opinion. It is the only remedy that can always be depended upon as a preventive and cure for croup. Anions many cf the trite and pointed sayings of our old friend, Wesley Harsey, none are more discriptive of tbe self opinionated than that, "it is big I, little u, speak I and condemn u." How often must we state that no communication will be published in these columns unless accompanied by the true name of author, not necessary for publication but as a guarantee of good faith? J. M. The beautiful weather which wo have been having for the past two or three weeks, has been superceded by a dismal, gloomy and disagreeable drizzle drozzle. But we cannot justly coniphin. He has a No. 1 stock of plows and farming implements. Try hiui before you buy. lie will divide profit9 with you. Berry, one of the best known citizens of Spender, Mo., testifies tiat he cured himself of the worst kind of piles by using a few boxes of De Witt's Witch Hazel Salve. He had been troubled with piles for over rbirty years and had used many different kinds of so-called cures; but DeWitt's was the one that did the work and he will verify this statement if any one wishes to write him. J. E Kaufmann. Five cents cotton, when the cost of production is considered, is dirt cheap, but the low prices at which Piatt, Hook & Shull are selling fine family and plantation groceries, hay and grain are cheaper than dirt. The editor, continuing his chase after the nimble dollar, which is a necessary essential in business life to keep things moving, took dinner Tuesday with Mr. II B Barr, where we found a most excellent dinner prepared under the supervision of his estimable sister, and the way we devoured the good things set befoic us, attested to our appreciation ai d enjoyment. Jhnii'g the progress cf a pleasant conversation we learnt d that Mr. Ban's matrimonial aspirations turned Michiganward ami we opine that etc the daisies bloom again ho will be in the land of eekrv, o ? shipping south wooden hams and nutmegs and barrels of apples with the largest ones on top and the smaller ones in the middle and at the t-w.f trim \v re?rrp{ this nossibilitv of a a. 'losing so good, industrious and piogrcssive citizen as he is but hope that his Northern bird, when he cages her will prevail upon her cap turer to confine her in the sunny clime and azure skies of the South in Lexington county. Tuesday night we spent with Mr. I). T. Hair, in the pretty little village of Summit. Mr. Hare is engaged in the mercantile business with his sou, in which he is making quite a success. He has an elegant home furnished elaborately with a view to comfort, couenvience and pleasure and is surrounded by peace and plenty. While at Summit we called at the office.of our neighbor, Our News Letter, and found the knights cf the rule and stick hard at work "sticking type" aud attending to their various duties. The editor and proprietor of lit-fln >5 Mr. W. A. ILtla nil M44VVW ... Hare, who also conducts a merchandizing business with his father. Mr. Shealy, the printer, understands his business. We wish the paper and force abundant success. Wednesday we arrived at the beautiful home of our friend D. F. Keisler, at whose hospitable board we have oftentimes abundantly admin istered to the wants of the inner man and on this occasion right royally were we entertained by himself aud thoughtful family and left regretting that we could not tarry longer with him. Wednesday night found us domi ciled beneath our own roof. Thursday ere the shades of night had given way to the reseate hues of dawniugday we winded our way to the depot where we boarded the cannon ball train for Lewiedale andinulmost, an iucreditable space of time after the merry tones of the conductor split the morning air with "All aboard" at Lexington, before our engine was screaming for Lewiedale and puffing into the depot. At this point in our round we found the mer chants holding their own and while not quite run to death waiting on customers, they had no moments to spare in idleness. At Senator Giif lith's spacious and elegant home we took dinner, which was one of the best that we ever set down to and which we enjoyed to the fullest ex tent of our gastronomic capabilities. Friday at Leesville we found the merchants of this beautiful and pro pressive town full of cheerful spirits over the contiuued prosperity of their town, notwithstanding the present gloomy business outlook, Leesville is iudeed fortunate in having such a clever set of business men whose study it seems to be to uutilize every opportunity for the good of the tjwn and their own prosperity. The people of this town are warm hearted, sociable and hospitable aud noted for their refinement culture and high moral tone. The people of this section turned out to meet the Auditor iu larger numbers, perhaps, than at any other point on the round. We enjoyed a well prepared dinner i t the hot-. 1 kept by Mrs. Derrick. We spent Saturday at B de.-burg. Business seemed to be on a boom and activity was the conspi-.-ious feature of the day. The merchants seemed to be giving t Loin selves no undue concern over the low pi ice of cotton, but have grasped the situation and have out done 5 cents col ton by making a cut iu the prices of their goods and as a consequence much of the gloominess which have taken posession of our farming interest has been robbed of much of its unpleasantness and a more cheerful feeling is I cin : awal e el.
