A number of presents in the shape of subscriptions loDg past due would be appropriate and at the same time gratefully appreciated. THE STATE PAIS. The attendance this year upon the State Fair was by long odds the largest in the history of the society. Notwithstanding the wide spread gloom and depression caused by the low price of cotton the people seemed determined to lay business cares fn* Hie nnnr>p and frive them XVi vuv ? ??? selves up to the full enjoyment of the festivities of the occasion. Peo pie from nearly every nook aDd corner in the State were present on the grounds. The exhibits also surpassed those of any previous year and were the a m ration of all who saw thein. One pleasiDg feature about this fair was the noticeable absence of drunk eDness and we trust that this absence will be noticed more and more at each succeeding fair. As is usual Lexington county waswell represented both in attendance and exhibits up to this time we have been able to obtain only the following list of exhibits from this county: P. J. Table beets. 2J. ?1. Red oats. 2d, $1. Webster, the Black aod Tan Republican boss, is making the Federal office holders tremble in their boots. He has the ear of the Administration and his policy, as outlined for him by the newspapers, is to turn out Cleveland's appointees and fill their places with AfricoAmerican citizens. As between the two classes it is hard to express a preference. The Prohibitionists of the State are organizing with a view of capturing the Governorship next fall. It is probable that L. D. Cbilds, of Columbia, will be the candidate selected to carry their banner to certain defeat. The well dtilled Clemson boys excited the admiration of a large majority of the visitor at the State Fair. Their evolutions were as perfect as it is possible for human training to make them. Old Farmer Ben Tillman should feel proud of his bojs. n th? The killing is claimed to have been purely accidental, which is possibly the case. The result of the Cotton Growers Convention, which met in Columbia Fair week, can be summed up by the use of the expressive 0. The IJuited Daughters of the Confederacy ended their fourth annual session at Richmond on.the 12th. Durranf, the California murderer, owing to the law's delay, cannot be haDged before February. Reciprocity and other treaties are to be negotiated between the United States and Canada. Ex President Childs, of the State Fair, very properly recommends the divorcement of races from the fair proper. J Miscd Pickles. ! Gathered Rom Exchanges fur the Readers of the Dispatch. Miss Emma Leila Dennis and Mr. Jacob Davis Hill were mariicd at i liishopville on the 10th. Richard Paul Monagahn, a prominent citizen of Sumter, died suddenly last Friday. It is understood in Washington that the President will make no more i appointments until the assembling of Congress. Ira Lee, a highly respected citizen ; of Oconee county, recently commit ted suicide by choking himself with his suspenders. Tom Piatt, of "me too" fame says that the citizens union is responsible for the defeat of the Republicans in New York. In a terrific gale off the New England coast, Sunday, three schooners were considerably damaged. No lives were lost. The United States circuit court has decided at Atlanta, Ga, that the Southern Railway must haul B A B's blind tiger liquor into this State. Itioo, and a latter day convert to Republicanism, has been appointed postmaster at Winnsboro. A mail carrier was held up near Warren, Idaho, on the 14th iust., by a lone highwayman and the mail pouch relieved of ?4.000 in cash and all of the registered letters. May the blessings of peace ami prosperity ever be with and attend them. It is understood here today that C. II. Coibitt, a Republican, and who bad for six years prior to 1807, held the post office at Swansea, has been re appointed postmaster by the McKinley administration in the place of Wm. Johusou, who is aD old dis abled soldier and a life long, consistent Democrat. Mr. Coibitt is a young man fully capable of performing manual labor, but, being a Republican and backed by a few political healers, he is again given this minor position over an old war veteran who is incapable of earning his subsistence by the ''sweat of bis brow."
