Principles of Profitable Farming, The attention of our readers is called to a most valuable little book, I entitel "Principles of Profitable Farming/' We do not know of any book on the subject that gives to the farmer so much practical information in the same short space. In this book experiments are described upon different soils and crops, and the farmer is instructed how to use fertilizers properly, in order to procure the largest yields. The reading matter is divided into three parts, as follows: Part I. describes some of the important results first obtained by Prof. Wagner, Director of the Experiment Station at Darmstidt, Germany, through green- manuring by means of potashphosphate fertilization. Part IL gives an account of theExpeiimental Farm at Southern Pines, North Carolina, which is under the auspices of the North Carolina State Horticultural Society, acting in cooperation with the State Experiment Station. The object of the experi ments conducted at this farm is to ascertan the relative proportions of the three principal fertilizing ingredients needed by various fruit and vegetable crops, viz, potash, phosphoric acid and nitrogen. Part III. is a summery of many important results obtained by the use of potash in experiments conducted at experiment stations in the United States. The foregoing outline will givp the reader some idea of the scope and character of this little book. All the facts are stated in clear and concise language, and the principles of profitable farming are set forth in a practical way. The book, which is full of illustrations and neatly printed and bound, is free of charge, a card addressed to the German Kali works, 93 Nassau St., New York, N. Y., being all that ie necessary to secure a copy. No intelligent farmer should be without it. The Place to Bay Clothing. The summer is last, the fall is upon us and winter is coming on apace. The clothes which were so deliciously cool and refreshing a few weeks ago are now out of date, back numbers in fact, and will hardly be comfortable to the wearer, during the fall and wiuter months. The question th* t n< w suits are absolutely necessary for the ccmfort of men and boys being thus disposed of, the next question in order is, where can the best, the most fashionable and the most durable be bought for the least money? This question is i i easy of solution. If you will visit I ! the mammoth clothing emporium I of M. Crops are now in such a condition that rain would not benefit them except turnips which could be re-sown. Rain would put the ground in condition for plowing and seeding which is being delayed. A French Sculptor Insulted. Through the discourtesy and stupidity of the local Bumbles the town of Dover has lost the fine statue of King Lear which Mr. Albert Mnlot. the French 6caJptor, desired to present to it. Mr. Mulct made the offer through Lord Dufferiu, and it was accepted, and several sites were successively selected and abandoned for various reasons. Now the corporation, although it has had a photograph of the statue in its possession for a year and could have sent some one to Paris to examine it if there was any doubt as to its value, lias coolly requested the artist to forward the bronze to Dover in order that they may come to a decision concerning it. Mr. Mulot is naturally indignant at this scurvy treatment and has promptly withdrawn the offer.
