At a regular meeting of the town council held last Monday night, E. B. Roof and G. M. Harman was appointed a committee to see that the property owners of the town put their pavements in good condition. Those who do tot wish to have the work done themselves can contract with Mr. Charlie Geiger, the town ^ marshal, who will do the work at a reasonable price. Council also decided to rigidly enforce the ordinance prohibiting riding horses on the side walks and j getting on the side walks while hitched to a hitching post. It was also decided to enforce the ordinance about filthy backyards, filthy hogpens and foul privies. If the residents fail to have their prem- j ises cleaned it will be done by the town council at expense of the person i living on the premises. Nelson McCartha, at one time employed by this editor to turn the press and do other work, died after a short illness last Sunday morning Nelson | was a faithful hand, kind heated and polite. The residence, and its contents, of Rev. Jacob Wikes, near Cbapin, was totally destroyed by what is supposed to have been and accidental fire, last Thursday. Mr. Wikes and family were away from home, being at a picnic, and were first informed of their loss after the dwelling had been consumed. We publish on our outside an investing and well written article from the pen of Mr F C Mitchell, a na. tive of this county, who is now telegraph operator in the office of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Co., in Newport News. William Thurmond is abou thirty years of age. He was name first Jn the class, in his examinatio before the Supreme court for admh sion to the bar; this was in Januar 1888. He was elected a member of th House of Representatives in 1893 and his record in that body withou matting umuiuus wuipansuuo i second to none, He championed the new fire in surance laws that require companie to fix the value of property insure< before, and not after, it is destroyed He fought the bill increasing th< number of circuit courts and the es tablishment of county courts. He favored the $100,000 appropri ation for Confederate veterans; oppos ed large subsides for colleges anc high schools, and favored libera appropriations for common schools. His persistent efforts induced tb< legislature to extend the time foi paying taxes in 1894 to March 1895 in this matter he had strong and abh opposition. He whipped out the Lord bone bill, after a struggle extending ovei two sessions, in which he met anc vanished some of the ablest debatori in the legislature, and defeated the bill by a vote of 71 to 26, and this in the face of a majority report favoring its passage, thus saving to the State and its taxpayers more than $69 000. He supported ? R. Tillman for the U S. Senate and made the' nominating speech. A?. And this is the man the fifth circuit expects to crown as its cheil prosecuting officer on the 25th daj of August. A Card from Mr. McCartha. [Advertisement.] My friends, still hearing this rumci about me, came to see me, and aftei a consultation with several of my friends, we decided to publish the facts of the case, and if this is net satisfactory to anyone, all we ask is to write either of the brethren who have signed this paper, or to Rev. James D. Kinard, Leesville, S. C. This is to certify that we, the undersigned, do say and declare that the charges in circulation about J. E. B. McCartha, concerning some school money of School District No. 71, wherein the said McCartha, being accused of making away, or got some of said money illegally or unjust, or by fraud, or by whatever name it may be called, or what may be said, we declare that the above charges are false and those who are telling such things on McCartha are simply engaging in untruths and falsehoods, and such parties should be beneath a gentleman or Christian's notice. We know McCartha and always found him to be an honest *nd truthful gentleman, and we would say tc all who hear such things on McCartha, consider the source it comes from, for such things have no foundation. Also, we, as a committee oi Salem E. L. Church Council, have investigated the above charges and rumors and found them false, and the parties who accused McCartha acknowledged in our presence that they had accused him wrongfully. Lvbrand will furnish an excellent barbecue at Brookland next Saturday, which is campaigr day at that place.
