The children said flowers, but they i ? we only such by possibility: at ! ? present one saw but a sheath of i green?hyacinths, well started. ^ Miss Brown says we're to put the 1 pots in saucers and keep water, in em 1 all the time, and they'll have lovely i flowers by Easter; then we're to take 'em to church. Don't you love i I flow ere, mother? ! ' Mrs. Dare thought of her windows j crowded with plants in her early : ^ married life, and of all the hopes that ; ( had died as had the blossoms, and 1 l-iciv waa fillor? -ar-JfVl Tn/lAPn I do, she said, though I haven't had 1 any for a long time, Mag. The little girl saw the tears, and with a child's quick sympathy said: 1 Has father gone out mother! No, he's in the room asleep. 'Well, perhaps he won't. I've learned a new hymn?airEaster carol ?and maybe he-'ll stay at home and sing it. If any one can keep him it will be i you, eaid<the mother. !Vfftcr did her best, but after an ! early supper, Mr. Dare would gojust for a moment?I'll be back soon, and the mother knowing what was in store for them felt tempted to give way to her downhearted feelings, i But she was a true woman and de- j termined that, though the father did ! drink, ho should not put out the j heme light?as long as there is a mother, there can be a home, a bright, cheery home, even if mother's heart aches. So the brave little woman told Bible stories to the childrer, sang with them and sent them to j bed quite merry, having given a last Jn/Vlr of +"hoir nfapiAiia -AnTr-ori ! *V UV n va The father in this family was not j a bad man. He managed to keep his position, and though ^ow and then he drank too much and had to pay up for it and so deny his children, yet they seemed a happy family few people knew the dark cloud which overshadowed them. If I drink too much, once in a while, Tm quite about it, John Dare j would say. But think what you were, and what you might be, but for this habit, his wife would urge. But John, as long as he actually struck no blows, would not see how he was striking his wife's heart, killing her ambition, starving his children as to the best and highest things. Meanwhile the flowers grew, Mag's had three spikes of blossfog^au^ - __ - Friday before. The purple and whiC JHRtlled the house with fragrance. .^JSverybody enjoyed them but father. I can't ~3 i,_ ?:j ~,3 SUIU.O LUC DUUl, UC SiUU ttgilUi K.UU. again. I'll be glad when they're gone, and Mrs. Dare noticed that when he had been drinking the scent seemed to anger him. She did not know that Sfcey recalled his boyhood to him?his mother's words and prayers?and made him ashamed of his wasted life! On Saturday, the mother left the children to attend the one meeting she rarely missed, her W. C. T. U. gathering. If father comes home, don't vex him, but keep out of his way, were her last words, and the children nodded their heads knowingly; they could be trusted! After studying their lessons, Mag proposed practicing the carols once more. It's the last time before we take the flowers, she said, and so the two began to sing; "Christ the Lord ia risen to-day, Sons of men, and angels, say," They heard their father's step, heavier, more uncertain than usual, but Mag only clung a little closer to Joe and sang on. # "Raise your joys and triumphs high, "Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply." The singing of the old familiar strain, the scent of* the flowers, fairly maddened the man, who had been drinking more than usual, and before Mag saw what he was about, he had seized the purple hyacinth and the pot was thrown at her. It struck the little girl on the tern pie; the singing was hushed, the child lay senseless on the floor, and the father, sobered in an instant, believed he had killed his own little darling. He lifted her to the sofa, bathed the bleeding wound, and soon Mag opened her eyes; but she did not seem tn Irnmv him as he sai<h Father didn't mean it?oh, darling! father didn't mean it. Love's redeeming work is done, she said faintly, and then her eyes closed?she had fainted once more. All night while the child seemed hovering between life and death, her father saw himself as never before. If she dies, drink did it?the drink I would not give up. Mag would willingly die to have you changed, said his wife gently. Then her father thought of her last words: Love's redeeming work is done. Whether she lives or dies, by God's help, I'll never touch the stuff again. Mag had seemed unconscious, but at these words she opened her eyes and &aid, Father! "'I Yes, dear.' asked the poor man reathlessly. Did you sav you'd never?she was V */ %> oo weak to be allowed to talk. I said, my darling, that by God's j lelp I'd never touch a drop of liquor j igain?will that help you to get well? j The little girl smiled, and giving a : . .. i ligh of wonderful contentment fell j tslee])Awakening on Easter morning, j Mag said: My flower! Two of tlie j beautiful spikes had escaped un- j larmed, and her mother brought j ;hem to her side. God forgive me, said the father; rou can't take your flower to the j church, my poor little girl. r"or? wo eirio- tViP carols, and will ! o ' vou prav, father.' Mother says it's j Duly prayer that will take the taste iway, Mrs. Pare looked at ber husband j apprehensively; how would he stand such plain speaking? But John had j been truly converted during that j awful night, and said gently; We'll j sing the carols, dear, and father'11 ; pray, now and every day, f r help to i live a neyr life. A new life?why* mother, it's fath- I er's Easter, isn't it? Then the sang, with tears, but ; with great joy: Love's redeeming work is done, Fought the fight, the viet'ry won. 5 ' _ jesua &gony is uer, Darkness veils the earth no more. E. Lsd by a Little CftiiL A man yrbo was not himself a Chris tian manied a lovely, earnest raindejl Christian woman. She did all in her power, both by her example and precept and earnest prayers, to influence her husband; but, though kind and loving to her, he did not love the Savion, which was the source of much anxiety tp her. She was ta*ken sick, i and it proved ner last siplraess. une ! day, coming into the room and see| ing his dear wife lying so wan and j sick, he could not help showing his j emotion in his face. The quick eye j of love detected it, and grasping : his hand with all the earnestness of a loving wife and dying Christian, she j poured out her wnole soul in prayer ; to God for his ppnyersigp $qd that he I might meet her in heaven. He was : much moved, but his heart was not I changed. She died. They had but | one little girl, who had seen just six | summers; but already the seed of di vine truth sowed in the heart of her girl, watered by the divine blessing, j had t$keii root, and was destined in j God' providence to bring an answer j to her mother's prayers. The father took his little girl to the grave, and as she stood there and saw the remains of her dearmothwi pityatthesoSo^^ffl^KH- * less child. When all was over th? j father led her by the hand to her j home. On the way, with a most 1 pitying expression, she looked up to ; his face and said, "Father what will we do now as mother is dead?'1 He said, "I know not, my child, myself." When near the house she said, "0, father, it seems to me I don't want to go home any more now mother is not there." Her little mind was busy and suddenly throwing her arms around her fathers knees, she j said, ^Father, I know what we must | do now; you mu3t pray, father, you i must pray." He had to tell his lit tie girl he did not know how to pray. "But," said he, "your mother taught you to pray; you say your prayer." She replied, "Then, father, you come up jnto the room where mother used to pray so much." They knelt together, and with her arms around his neck she said the J prayer her dear mother mother had ! taught her, and lo! it was a prayer | for him, that he might love thp j Savior, and that he and she might meet her in heaven. This was more than that heart of stone could stand and bursting into a flood of tears, he cried from the bottom of a sin stricken soul, "God, be merciful to me a sinner." And thus his little child had taught him to pray, and God wrought an answer to her mother's prayers.
