The father in this family was not j
a bad man. He managed to keep
his position, and though ^ow and
then he drank too much and had to
pay up for it and so deny his children,
yet they seemed a happy family
few people knew the dark cloud
which overshadowed them.
If I drink too much, once in a

would say.
But think what you were, and
what you might be, but for this habit,
his wife would urge. But John,
as long as he actually struck no blows,
would not see how he was striking
his wife's heart, killing her ambition,
starving his children as to the best
and highest things.
Meanwhile the flowers grew, Mag's

again. I'll be glad when they're
gone, and Mrs. Dare noticed that
when he had been drinking the scent
seemed to anger him. She did not
know that Sfcey recalled his boyhood
to him?his mother's words and
prayers?and made him ashamed of
his wasted life!
On Saturday, the mother left the
children to attend the one meeting
she rarely missed, her W. C. T. U.
gathering. If father comes home,
don't vex him, but keep out of his
way, were her last words, and the
children nodded their heads knowingly;
they could be trusted!
After studying their lessons, Mag
proposed practicing the carols once
more. It's the last time before we
take the flowers, she said, and so the
two began to sing;
"Christ the Lord ia risen to-day,
Sons of men, and angels, say,"
They heard their father's step,
heavier, more uncertain than usual,
but Mag only clung a little closer to
Joe and sang on.

"Raise your joys and triumphs high,
"Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply."
The singing of the old familiar strain,
the scent of* the flowers, fairly maddened
the man, who had been drinking
more than usual, and before Mag
saw what he was about, he had seized
the purple hyacinth and the pot was
thrown at her.
It struck the little girl on the tern
pie; the singing was hushed, the
child lay senseless on the floor, and
the father, sobered in an instant, believed
he had killed his own little
darling.
He lifted her to the sofa, bathed
the bleeding wound, and soon Mag
opened her eyes; but she did not
seem tn Irnmv him as he sai<h Father
didn't mean it?oh, darling! father
didn't mean it.
Love's redeeming work is done,
she said faintly, and then her eyes
closed?she had fainted once more.
All night while the child seemed
hovering between life and death, her
father saw himself as never before.
If she dies, drink did it?the
drink I would not give up.
Mag would willingly die to have
you changed, said his wife gently.
Then her father thought of her
last words: Love's redeeming work
is done.
Whether she lives or dies, by God's
help, I'll never touch the stuff again.
Mag had seemed unconscious, but at
these words she opened her eyes and

A mountaineer and his wife had
come down out of the mountains of
Kentucky to go to some new location
in Tennessee. They had a little jag
of household goods,^and both were
dressed poorly. After he had paid
the freight on his good he lacked a
few shillings of having enough to pay
their fare. I heard them talking it
over as the sat on a baggage truck on
the platform.
44We 'uns will have to go back, I
reckon," said the man.
"But we 'uns can't go back," she
replied. "We 'uns hev sold out and
hey no place to go to."
"But whatjkin we 'uns do?"
"Hevn't we 'uns <?ot money 'nuST'
"No."
"And they 'uns won't take us?"
"No."
"And we 'uns is in a fix."
"Sartin."
"But the Lord is down yere as well
as up'n the hills, ain't he?" she asked.
"He mought be, but the chances
seem again it."
"But I'll go out among the cotton
bales and find a spot to pray. The
Lord never did desert his own."
"You mought try it," he said
doubtingly.
I had told three or four of the
boys and we had chipped in $5 and
handed it to the man, and he had the
money in hand when the woman returned.

"But," said he, "your mother
taught you to pray; you say your
prayer." She replied, "Then, father,

mother used to pray so much."
They knelt together, and with her
arms around his neck she said the

! taught her, and lo! it was a prayer
| for him, that he might love thp
j Savior, and that he and she might
meet her in heaven. This was more
than that heart of stone could stand
and bursting into a flood of tears, he
cried from the bottom of a sin stricken
soul, "God, be merciful to me a
sinner." And thus his little child
had taught him to pray, and God
wrought an answer to her mother's
prayers.
