PARKER, of New York. For Vice-President, HENItY G. DAVIS, <>t West Virginia. Honor to Editor Mamel. News and Courier. Wo printed yesterday an editorial from the KershawEta which is not only a credit to its writer, hut which is a credit to South Cur oliua journalism and to South Carolina citizenship. The editor of the Kershaw Era is .1 W. Maine*. Ho \vnn ?n nvo.wilnocc brutal murder of \V. T. Floyd by John T. Morrison and bo paints a picture of that tragedy which brings the incidents of it and the participants in it vividly before the public mind. But the feature of tho editorial m the Kershaw Kra which wins for Mr. HAmel the esteem aud respect ot his fellow craftsmen of tho press and which entitles him to tho regard und gratitude of his follow citizens gencraly is his courageous condemnation of lynch law in any circumstances and his frank criticises of those influences which finally brought about au instance of mob violence in Kershaw. It is one thing for au editor in Greenville, Columbia or Charles ton to condemu a lynching in Kershaw, and it is quite another thing for an editor in Kershaw to do so. Mr. iianisl wrote of his personal acquaintances, h i s neighbors, his fellow townsmen and his fellow countymen. Tho audience to whom he spoke know kim and the individual members of bis audience were known tohim Yet be does not hesitate to speak with a candor and a couragewbich cannot he too highly held or nnmtrifindad Mr tmmnl nnn. deoins the lynching of Morrison hut he did not fail to condernu also that failure of public servants to do their'duty, that failure of the courts to perform their functions which resulted in the crime which roused popular indignation to tho point of frenzy and which impelled the people of Kershaw to obtain through disregard of law the puniahment for crime which they feared would not ba accorded by the Conrts. Mr. uamel has set an exrmple werthy to be followed by his brother editors of South Carolina, lie has discharged fearlossly and well his obligation as a citizenas well as his responsibility us a newspaper man.' Says Mr. namol: uWo appeal to those who huvc the execution of the law in their hands to conscientiously and faithfully discharge their dut\ iu the punishment of all violators of law, which will create a wholesomo fear and respect for the law as well asu confidence in it and wo appeal to the pouplo of our county to forhear taking the law into their own hands, but to put their strong public sontimont behind the enforcement of the law and their just condemnation against nl' miscarriages of justice in whatsoever particular thev may occur. Then wo may hopo t* seo evil-minded persons fear to do evil and the good citizens con*, fidont in the security the law nf IV > <!a II ii ai> appeal ilal ?* tiim-ly iu.?. li.at is well made. It is mi appeal ;ti which every editor and. every citizen in South I'and inn can oiu an>l should i'do. - - ? -J*K? ^? 14W? ? ? Hoy! Hayes (iiven Two rteeks Longer.
