Fanners Lynch A Black Fiend: Young Boy Named Brown Tried to assault White girl and was Put To Death By A Crowd. Special to Gro3nvillo News. Grenwood, Sept. 24.? A crowd of Laurens citizens brought over into Groetiwood county b}' way of Smith'sbridgo over Saluda river last night, a young n gro boy named Brown and lynched him by hanging him to a limb. Bi own had attempted rape on the four teen-year-ohl daughter of Doc Hughes, a well known white farmer in the "ForV between Reedy andSaluda rivers Mr.Hughes was uwnir frnm hnmn vr?fct?r<lrtv nftnr ? " - J " ?" ~ J I noon looking after bin gin. Mrs. Hughes left tho house to go and visit a sick neighbor. Tho negro, who wui picking cotton n?ar the house, saw Mrs Hughes leave and knew lhatMr. Hugheswas also away . Ho came to the house whore tho young girl and an older sister were left alone. While thei e the younger one had occasion to go into nu outhouse to empty a basket of cotton. Brown followed her in tho house and at tempted a criminal assault. The girl screamed and her sister ran to her assistance. When she arrived the negro desisted and after threatening to kill both the girls if they ever told what had happened, returned to his work in tho field. As soon as their father came he was told of what bad happened and soon a crowd of neighbors had gathered at the house. Some were for carrying him to Laurens court house and others for 1 y n c h i n g. The lynching sentiment prevailed and he was brought across tho river into Greenwood county and then lyn- : ched. Pasaersby saw the body in the road this morning. The ' Groenwood coroner is now there holding an inquest. An Intolerable Suspicion. The caretaker of a secondary school tendered his resignation to the committee and remarked, in the course of his letter, that tho suspicious upon him was unbearable. He caliep before the managers for an explanation. "Well, gents," he said, "I am honest, and 1 won't stand being suspected. If I find anything about the school when I am sweep ing, I always return it. Every bow and again the teactier, or some one that is too cowardly to tace me gives me a slur. Tree stalls are provided for stock, and Tree bedrooms are furnished all exhibitors who are willing to stay on the grounds all the time. Numerous restaurants on the grounds furnish meals it all hours of the day or night at reasonable prices, and feed for stock Is delivered right at the stalls at the regular market prices, and besides, there are olllcers who look after all exhibitors and see that every one is satisfactorily located. All exhibits may be shipped directly to the grounds, for there Is ample side track provision for all the cars. Solid cars ihould be billed "Secretary State Fair, Columbia. S. C.. care Fair flround Tracks," and they will be rushed right through to destination. All exhibitors of live stock should arrive on the grounds not later than Friday or Saturday before the Fair, so as to get the stock quiet ifter shipping and get them to eating well before befog put into the show ring. The premium list is very liberal this year, and it is to be hoped that the management will meet with success in inducing a very large number of new exhibitors to attend the Fair, so that the Fair will become representative of every section of the State and of all the resources of Carolina.
