The Nation's Drink Hill. The American Grocer, which for \ ears kept h cartful uc?rd of the nation* diiuk hill, the v amount expended for rtuuulants, hoth strong and weak, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, has finally summed up the figure:* for 1000, and finds that wo paid $1,451,033,070 for our drink, or as much as the cotton, wheat, corn, rye, rice anil sugar crops. Alchol, however, took the greater part of this money as the following details show: Alcoholic drinks $1,242,043,1 SI Non-alcoholic stimulants ? Coffee 156,GOO,261 Tea 45,000,000 rr ono nnn x I J VvV'?\/v?/ Total, 190.1 $1,451,633,379 This represents a per capita expenditure of $1$ 15 or $90 75 per family. The quantity of the four leading beverages: Gallons. Coffee 1,500,902,014 , Beer 1,449,879,952 Tea 450,000,000 Spirits and wines 157,130,028 This is u frightful recoul. There is ? popular impression that, owing to one cause and another, the consumption of alcoholic drinks is j decreasing in this country but The American Grocer can tiud nothing to warrant this belief. What diminution there has been in the drinking of whiskey has been made up in the use of beer and in recent years there has been a large increaso in the consumption of whiskey. The alcoholic drink bill grows steudily larger as follows: Cost of alcoholic stimulants in 1903Beer * 727,042,245 Whiskey (exclusive of quantity used in arts) 417,915,413 Wines 97,785,360 1902 *1,242,943,118 1901 1,172,505,235 1900 1,094,044,155 1899 1,059,503,787 189S 973,589,080 We get ttie above figures hy wav of The New Orleans Times Democrat, .vhich remarks upon the matter to which they relate, i. e , the habits of the people, that "on no other subject has there been so much legislation.
