farmers' institute Reaches 'r its Close. f Prof, llardin Speaks on tho I'se ^ of fertilizers. ? Prof P. H. * Kawl on the Feeding of Live Stock. v Special to The State. c Clemson College, Aug. 12.? o Tho closing session of the otate e Farmers' institute was held in tho 1 chapel this morning at 10 o'clock c The two lecturess were Col. M. B. Hardin, professor of chemistry, s on "Commercial Fertilizers," ^ and Mr. 13. H. Raw!, assistant m animal husbandry, on 4'Feeding l' Live Stock." Col. Hardin gave ospacial atten 11 tion to the desired component 0 parts of fertilizers and the me- " thods of composition. Ho said ^ that a chemical analysis of soils * was not a sitisfactorj means of P determining the fertilizer that e was needed to produce a certain ^ crop. Frequently the most unproductive soils gave the best * analysis, nnd though it was a tedious process yet the best plan was for a farmer to determine for himself by actual experiment the H fertilizer that his soil needed. 1 o AU'l the best way was to buy (] those fertilizers which had given ^ satisfaction, keeping an account t of their component parts, and va- e rying tho fertilizer according ^ to results and best judgment. ^ Col. Hardin said that tho cot- h ton meal situation in South Carolina was in nn unsatisfactory con- h dition. Much of theimeal offered ' for sale had too much hulls in it, ^ which reduced tho percentage of f ammonia. He told of several simple tests to determine tho ^ quantity of hulls in tho meal. His ormarks on this subject were heartily endorsed by Mr E. L. .Johnson, a cotton seed meal ' t export of Memphis, Tennessee., and an oltl Clemson college graduate. Mr. Johnson said it would he a most excellent thing if the hoard of trustees would allow a com8' mittee of tbo faculty to arrange ^ with the cotton oil mill men of the.S ate a pro rata exchange basis of cotton seed for cotton seed uieal and for the regulation of the sale of cotton seed meal. *. He thought it would be well to ^ have sevoral grades of cotton seed U meal each one tagged properly, and I letthe purchaser determine whether a he wanted a high or low grade J meal. v M r .Inhnunti ulan nai/1 ? liirv^ I a " """ - ?? I'?" " I tribute to Col. Newman, who hut* t resigned his professorship to take e effect next July. Prof. B. H. ttawl devoted the | principal part of his address to ^ the subject of feeding calves b and pigs. He said that no exact 8 general rule could bo luid down * for the feeding of milch cattle or work horses or any other cluss of stock. The most successful feed w er was tho one who studied the f< individual temoei anient and tastes of his 6tock and fed in accordance I therewith. Hut there are general ^ principlea which should be observed. The food snitablo for work animals would not do for growing ei animals and to feed economically a the needs of the animals would d have to be observed. If the same it food was given in hot weather w that was given in winter, it might t< sustain the animal, but it would not be economical snd much of the food would be wasted so far as results wore concerned. * In tho feeding of pigs the j general principle could be f, laid down that the most profitable P food that could be given a pig was k that which was given its mother ^ In other words, tho bettor tho pig 1 was sustained when very young | the better it would be for tho pig He gave a number of combina ions of food and I he comparative esults, showing retnsrkablo difereneo in results from different oinbiuutions of food. A proper ending meant the differenco l?e? ween profit nnd loss. Ho ro^ ommended most highly comhinut ions of Benuudu grass, rape and tber green food in aomhinttion nth corn for growing ]>'?? Ho ondemned the raising of calves n skim milk, which lacked those lemonts necessary foi tho produce ion of hone and muscle. But orn meal and other things couftined tho elements and they hould ho substituted for the rhole milk. The most important matter for h?> fiirmpra ami stnr?'r rniwnru in louth Coroliua whs tho adultertion of stock food. Ilo venturd tho assertion that a largo proortiun of tho stock food sold in outh Carolina was adulterated, t was high time to pass laws revolting food stuffs rojectod lsewhere being brought to this tato for sale. This closed tho proceedings of ho institute. END OF HITTER FIGII T. "Twophysicians had a long and tub'oorn tight with abccss on my igbt lung" writes !. E Ilughes f DuPoint, Ga. "and gave 1110 ip.
