THE LEDGER. THURLOW S. CARTER. EDITOR AND MANAGER. I HSU ED WEDNESDAY AND 8AT1JKDAY SlIBSUKlPriON *. AO PE?? YK \1< WKDN K8DAY JULY 20, 1004. Hnilding and Loan Started Him. In the address of Mr. D. A. Tompkins, the well known manufacturer and businessman of Char lone, Dcforo the State League of Building Loan Associations at Wrightsvillo week before last ho tells how ho saved his first money, as follows: "When I was working as a journeyman machinist for the Hcthlchomlron Works in Pennsylvania, I blundered by good chance into the ownership of two shares of building and loan stock. This meant that 1 make a payment of *2 per month into the building and loan association for my own benefit. 1 thought lightly of tho incident and folt that 1 was going to save #10 or #15 a month bj depositing that amount in the hank each month. After G or 8 months 1 was astonished to lind that my #2 a month in the building and loan had aggregated as much as my cash deposit in the bHnk. Immediately 1 applied for three more shures in tho building and loan which i soon got and when these shares matured, I was put in possession of tho first lump sum of money I ever saved. Ever sinco then 1 have found the association advantageous in developing a habit of saving, in promoting a spirit of thrift and economy, in accumulating n fund ( against a rainy day, in building a 1 home, and in having resources whore money it available in a pinch. We all neod a little bit of pressure tir do our best. Above all things we need a little bit of prossuro to make us save a little money oach pay day rather than , spend {the .money this pay day with a promise to ourselves to save tho double amount next pay day, which we rarely ever do. ?It seems that all good things are swindlers. The genuine, I leal building and loan association is one of the most .beneficent influences in any community." Happenings in The State.
