Ti'ie Sen t ' 'v's. c:??! 'ih Ob. Wilson of W burg Wnr.U the Miidercus Band Brought Injustice. Ihe State, 7th inst. Col Thos. Wilson of Cades, tine of the leading citizens of Williamsburg county and the owner of extensive lumber and railroad interests, was in the city yesterday and made some very jHtrong statements in regard to the murder of the negro prisoner at Scrnnton lust Saturday. Col. Wilson wits unsparing in his denunciation of the crime. The fact that this negro was not convicted by one of the best juries which hud ever been drawn in Williamsburg county shows that there was some belief ti at the negro had provocation when he shot the liveryman, winter. Col. Wilson was un the local train just preceding the \cstibulc, and seven masked men entered the train. Col. W ilson ordered them out as they were terrifying the passengers. At this one of the men asked him if the prisoner was on hoard. Col. vv ilurtr* in f ? ? ?? I V.. ... . ..V. . ? V. .... tho man remarked, "Well, boys, Col. Wilson says he ain't in here, so thai settles it: he is com in t tip on the vestibule, as we heaiil. Col Wilson heard while on the train that it had been told at Kingstrcc two hours before that the prisoner would be sent to Co ! lumbiu on the vestibule. He wants the matter invostigut ed thoroughly. None of the sever, men arc known to him, but they evidently knew him. lie declined j to make any comment on the uc j tion of the sheriff, but tie did j hocm to think it strange that t?:e j negro's removal to Columbia should have been known .so gon orally even before the train arrived at dcranton. Capt. George Evans, who was of the the party to whom Col. Wilson was speaking, recalled the celebrated Culbreath case m Edgefield county. Culbreath was a whito farmer of good circumstances and was arrosto 1 on sus? picion of having killed a young man who was too attentive to members of Culbreath's family. mi_ _ ? ? - xnero was a groat dual or feelir.g over tho matter, and when the prisoner was in Mr. Evans' office making out papers for application for bail, a mob of about .'iO ap poarod. Culbreith was given a pistol and was advised to defend himself if necessary. The mob covered Mr. Evans and Mr. Ernost tiarv with their pistols and then fired upon Culbreath. who w--s in an ad joining room. 1 he pi is. oner fire 1 into tne mob hut with out effect. This is one of tiio first lynchings in the history of too State, and as in thoca-e <>f tinpoor negro at Seranton, the crime was not the one for which lynch law is claimed by some l<> be the otdy tit tribunal.
