The Logic of a Suicide. Practical Reasons Which Led Plant to End Hie Life. Savannub Press. Is suicide over commendable ? The question is ooe that will naL tirally be asked in view of the self-destruction of R. H. Plant at Macon on' Saturday afternoon. Here was a man in the prime of life, who had presumably enjoyed all the sweets of earthly existence, to whom great financial disaster had come, involving scores, perhaps hundreds, of others who had shown confidence in his business judgment. His affairs were ap parently so hopelessly involved that there was absolutely no chance of meeting but a small pro portion of his liabilities. If he were the lone sufferer, if no others were dragged down into poverty by the failure, one cun appreciate that courage might still remain with which to meet the changed conditions of the future. But widows and orphans had placed their little all in bis keeping, business as> sociates and social friends had trusted him with their funds, only to suddenly awaken to the startling consciousness that everything hud been swept away in some un known maelstrom'. Life meant not - only poverty foi Plant and his family. That could be borne by any courageous man. Out of many such wrecks in the past splendid fwi tunos have beer ?nd even greater heights of prosperity attained. But life also meant distress for thoset who had freely surrendered their livelihood into his hands, doubtless absolute want and suffering for many. It meant ceaseless approbrium, the glauce of distrust, the open words of doubt and accusation. It meant and agony of mind that few have ever known and none save actual sufferers can ever remotelv realize. Death meant more than a mere escape from mental' anguish or bodily ills. It meant comparative affluence for loved ones and restoration for those who had suffered financial losses through his , instrumentality. It meant tbe lifting from many anxious hearts of the ourden that the future seemed to hold because of the failure of the banks whose destinies he had directed. Widows whose support had been ruthlessly torn away could once more feel that the sting of privation was withheld from them and theirs. Associates whose business prosperity bung in the balance awaitiug the issue of the failure would again be assured that the work of years had nol been in vain. No duobt Robert Plant surveyed it all, perbapc calmly, at least thoughtfully. Life is dear to all, it wa9 dear to him, but death seemod the open sesame that unlocked another great fortune, wiped out the blunders o: the past and erased from the led ger the errors that had wrough ruin. His deuth has doubtlesi made complete restoration to al the depositors and the current u: their lives will go on as smoothlj as though tlie events of the pas week were but a horrid phanton of the night swept away forevei by the breaking of tho dawn. Moralists will say that Plant'i act was unjustifiable. But a tend derer sentiment of pity will b< felt by the greater public for tin man who wiped out his obligation with his life's blood. Death, when unmasked, shows ui a friendly faGO, And is a terror only at a distance Foley's Honey and Tar con tain no opiates and can safely b< given to children. Sold by Fun derburk Pharmacy. It seems ithat Mr. M H. Reeves, I a popular citizen and druggist, left his store about 10 o'clock and stepped across the street tj the office of the Southern railway agent with whcrn. ho had business, i ? but Mr. Willis, the agent, had closed his office for the night and i & gone home. As Mr. Reeves took hold of the door knob and attempt rd to turn it to enter the offico he was struck from behind and felled to the floor of the platform and knocked senseless. Mr. Reeves knew nothing until perhaps an hour later when ho was found lyi ing in a semi-conscious condition upon the platform whero he had fallen, by Policeman Nelson, who heard his groans. Mi. Reeves' body bears the marks of more than 25 bruises where he was beaten and kicked. I His pockets were rifled, but only ii sumII amount of money was mising from one of his pockets, while the other, which contained his pocket booK, was undisturbed. The whole case is wrapped in mystery. The theory is advanced by some that bio assailants thought they were victimizing Mr. Willis, the railway agent, with a view to robb'mg the depot or obtaining a considerable sum of money perhaps, which they hoped lo And upon the person of tho agent, as it is generally known " that he has no safe in his office.
