Spartanburg, March 5.?Spar- ! tanburg county furnishes some- 1 thing of an Eaoeh Arden affair, . , or a romance in which a man 'I twice married without knowing i I whether or not his first wife was < alive or dea l. Recently J. A. West of Aklahoma, Miss , wrote i to the clerk of court of this coun . s ty, inquiring for any information ' relative to his father, ,1. T. West, 1 thereby hangs the tale. "Long lines of cliff breaking have left a 1 chasm," in the 47 years past. I In 1857 Mr. .1. T. West and Miss Elizabeth Bennett, both of I this county, were married. A fe v years afterwards Aleck Ben. . nett, father of Mrs West moved I to Alulmtua, and his daughter relinquished all claims and obligations of her marital vows and ; went with her father. The war 1 between the north and south com ing on, J. T. West enlisted and served as a Confederate soldier until his surrender at Appnmatox. lie then returned to his old home in this county, to retrieve his for ( I. tune and disasters. During all of ' this time never a lino nor message 1 came to him from his wife, and j 1 in the daily routine of a struggle 1 for existence and prosperity, she j slipped out of his life. A few ; ( months after this wife left for ' Alabama with her father, she gave ' birth to a son, ). A. West, who . wrote the letter of inquiry. The ' husband knew nothing of this, of 1 course After he had well settled down, a yoir subsequent to tho war, and was engaged in farming he married a Miss Pyo of Walnut Grovo this county. From this union there are three children ? all grown. The letter from his son in Mississippi does ru t stale ( whether or not tho tirst wife and 1 his mother, whose maiden name : was Bennett, was alive or dead. According to information received here 40 Japanese transports, escorted l>y the entire naval lleet, have been energetically landing troops in Uoiea at Fusan and Chemulpo. It is estimated that fully 100,000 men have disembarked, and it is supposed that an immediate ads vnnce into northern Corea is contemplated. J?T*otn the fact that the Japanese lleet is thus empmyed it is felt that no immediate attack noon Vladivostok or Port Arthur will ho llilldc. Tlio reported landing of 2,500 Japanese at Song-Chin, Plaksin hay, on the east coast of Cores, lias been continued. 'I lie enrollment '.>f volunteers is proceeding with enthusiasm at Vladivostok. The Japanese Fleet Pom bards Vladivostok. Vladivostok, March 5.--A licet )f five .Japanese battleships and Lwo cruisers appeared otl' this place at 1.25 o'clock this afternoon and bombarded the tmvn unit shore batteries for 45 minutes. The Heet approached from the lirection of Askold island at the east entrance of Ussuri- bay and nbout 32 miles southeast 01 Viadi* vqstok. Entering Ussuri bay the enemy formed in line of battle but did not approach to a closer range than live and one.third miles 1 luy directed their tire against the ?hore batteries and the town, but no damage resulted as most of their 200 lyddite shells failed to burst. The Russian batteries command?d oy Gens. Veruonetz and Aria? inonotT did not reply, awaiting a iloser approach of the enemy. The attack resulted in no loss ;o the Russians, but cost the jiiuniy zuw,uuu rouoies (^1UU,(J00) n ammunition.
