Grewsome echoes Of The Explosion. Miners' Bodies Seem to Have Been Blown to Pieces?Rescuers Hare a Close Call. Pittsburg, Jan. 26.?Even vhe elements seem conspiring to prevent the work of rescue at the Harwick mines. Almost zero weather and a bitter wind late in the afternoon, swept down over the little valley where the mine 1a located and nearly added another list of deod to the long black tabic already measured off. Not onty was the work of search for the dead and living, if any arc .till alive, rudely interrupted, bul cold and ice and wind combined nearly cosl the lives of 16 more good men. Q At 3 o'clock thi* afternoon It men went dowa into tho shaft tc do the work of bratticing, bol storing, tunneling nnd removing the debris that lias so fur barret: their progress into the working! where the men wcie at labor, when the explosion occurred Their shift was supposed to bo o three hours only. Even at tha it was a hard task. Even beferi the bucket reached the I otton they were drenched with watei which the cold draught througl the shaft soon turned to ice. Shortl/ after they were le down, two at a time, in the buck et, a temporary hoist that hac beeu rigged up to bring up tbi debris and the Qdead was 6taite( down the shaft. Then came snov and the cold and efforts wen made to reach the living men a the bottom of the shaft, but th< wooden aides of the hoist, swot len by the waler> stuck to tbi iron gnido slide und then c*m< hours of manoeuvoring to rencl the bottom. The men below bat had no means of warmth ant many of them v?ero standing ii deep water. Every effort wa: made to lower the cage aud finally it was loosened and got within It feet of the bottom. The rnei were within easy reach of a rope but their fingera numbed and al most frozen by tho cold, wen unable to grasp the offered help. It was 8 o'clock when the firs three men of the party who won down at 3 o'cleek were brought t< the surface. Not one of then was able to walk, they were si numbed by the cold, and Ibei they told of their experience ii the mine below. Henry Beckert was one of th< first men out of the cage. Iii wae carried to the boiler lions and after 20 minutes of warmt' managed to straighten himsel and 6ay: 44It was a frightful ex perience. Tho cold and hunge ?and no good we could do. W were too cold to work. There i apparently no one to rescue. W had a hard time to find many o the dead. A shred of clothinj hero and another there, a jacket a pair of overalls, but few hod ies. "When we left the hot ton o the shaft there were 12*bodies ly iag there ready to he brought up There are many others there an the bodies of many will never b found." Mike McQuaike, another of th rescuers, said: 4'We have at th Dottoin 01 me snari a pile 01 leg and arms nnd trunks that resem ble anything but the remains c human beings. It is the moi grewsotnc sight 1 ever witnesr ed." 14 When do you expect to reac the place whero the most of th men are?" he was asked. "There is no such place," r< plied he, "they are scatterad a over the -mine, some of then poor fellows, in fragments. W find them along the eutries or tin pieces of them. My God, mai you have hut h faint conception P of the awful force of this explosion. It did not leave enough of some of them to tell who thev i wore.*' al 71 UODIKS UECOVEUED. hi i Pittsburg, Jan. 27.?Three Nl days -have elapsed since the ter- at 1 rible catastrophe at the Harwich ,u mine of the Allegheny Coal C?., P1 1 and tonight at midnight 71 bodies v< ' have been recovered and brought 1 to the sufaee. Only 18 of these j have been identiiied. The day ir ' | has been one of horror in the lit j tie village on the hill above the al ' pit mouth, but oven while the ct blackened bodies were brought C( ) from the top of the shaft aud n ' j taken on sleds to tho school house : i where undertakers were roadv. The bill was due and a letter was written requesting pay ment. A letter cumo back saying that the writer was somewhat t short of cash, and requesting an * extension of ninety days on the : 1 bill. The Kansas City merchaut s wrote another letter sayiag that ; 1 he must insist on the payment of f his bill and suggested that if the r p ? customer was "hard up" the loial t bank would undoubtedly accom 0 modate him with a loan of $200 so that the bill might bo paid. 3 In seveuty~one hours the Kan* I 3 8*8 City merchant received ft reply * i which ho is carrying around and j J showing to his friends, as a cor- j 1 tificato of the nerviest business i 1 proposition over issued in Mis- 1 s souri.
