The canvass will bo continued in the city and in tho other towns in the county tomorrow, and Gen. M. L. Foley's Iloney and Talis a safe and certain remedy for coughs, croup and luug trouble, and 's tho only prominent cough medicine that contains no opiates or other poisons. Mr. I). A. Tompkins, the leading manufacturer of Charlotte, is very much concerned over Russian operations in the fur east, and thinks the United Slates should join England and Japan in putting a stop to the Bear's further encroachments. He rea sons the situation out plausibly like this. Russia already controls^Manchuriu and when she gets centrol of China ss she surely will inless we interfere, she will be able to organize the Chinese into armies that will give her command of the entire continent of Asia. I ho Russians are looking out only for Russia, and once in control of Asia, they will shut out the trade of the balance of the world, including that of the United States. There is plenty of good cotton land in central Asia and Russia will make use of it to tbe extent of raising as mnch cotton as may be needed to sopply hor entire population.? Eventually she will become a strong competitor of the United States for the cotton trade for the balance of tbe world, supplying both raw material and manufactured goods. Confronted as we uro with probabilities of this kind, Mr. Tompkins thinks wo should bo looking after our own interests. Ho is in favor cf an isthmian canal, but he thinks that as between tho two propositions the canal question might very well wait until the Asiatic trade question is settled, for if Russia should (ioally prevail in her contention with Japan as she surely will if allowed time enough, there w ill no longer be any need for the canal. There will not be left in Asia sufficent trade inducements to war rant the expense of digging. Of course, it is natural for thoae of us who are unable to appreciate the extent of our direct intercut in matters of this kind to take the position that we would just as lief not mix up in troubles that don't seem to concern us directly; but at tho an me time it must bo admitted that the arguments of Mr. Tompkins is full of forco and worthy of serious consider ation. ?
