An Old Huntei's Advice.
Here is tho advice an old
hunter gives to those who may
come in unexpected contact with
bad animals:
"If you are cornered by a snake
stand motionless and bo will never
bite.
"If a vicious dog attacks you
show him a knife or some similar
instrument, and he will keep out
of reach. A dog can never learn
the deadlines? of a revolver or a
gun, but unless he has the rabies
he knows bow to respect a knife.
"If a swarm of wild bees attacks
you stand motionless and
let out all your broath. Tbon
only a few of the swarm will
sting."
This advice should bo reversed
at sea. A man who is swimming
in shark infested waters is safe as
long as he kicks about and makes
a great deal of noise. The shark
is too timid to approach unything
that looks as if it meant to fijjht.
"What would you do in case
you were cornered by a cinnamon
bear?" some ono asked the old
hunter.
"Say my prayers," he answered
laconically.

Union, Nov. 16.?Oss Miller,
a negro fireman in Union mills,
was crushed to death last night
by walking into the large flywheel
of the mill engino. His legs and
arms wore ground to pulp and the
entire top of his hoad was tftt'en

broken. It is said he was either
drunk or drinking and as he pass

of the State board of dispensary
directors withholding Charleston's
share from the profits of
the dispensaries because of the
alleged non-enforcement of the
dispensary law in this city caused
a howl among tho city officials
and citizens generally this morning.
Their action is regarded as
an outrage and tho governor, tho
beard of directors and Chief State
Constable Hammet are being
roundly criticised. Tho county
and city officials aro not doing
much talking on the matter, for
at the proper time they will show
their record, which, it is said, will
bo satisfactory, but the citizens

Bad Blaze at Monroe.
Special to Charlotte Observer.
Monroe, Nov. 17.?About 2
o'clock this morning the residence
of Mr. J. VV. Ashcrnft, in the
western part of town, was found
to be on fire. The firo was not
discovered until the roof was falling
in. The inmates had hardly
gotten out before tho blaze swept
hro ugh every room. Nothing
I was saved except one or two
trunks. The house burned rapidly
and before the firo department
could roach the scene it had nearly
burned down. Tho loss was partly
covered by insurance. The fire
was of unknown origin.
